The walls of the SSR base shook violently, dust being shaken loose and falling from the ceiling as everyone in the hallway, including Steve, froze in place. Conversations suddenly halted and the hall fell into silence as everyone's eyes turned upwards as they watched the lights gently swing back and fourth. Steve grasped the leather straps of his shield tightly in his hand, feeling his chest tighten.
After the young soldier had burst into the war room and claimed Jules was in trouble, Steve instantly ran from the room with his shield securely around his forearm, not wasting a single second to find his friend. Though, Steve new in his heart the second the building shook he'd been too late. Jules had shifted and he'd lost the chance to calm her down. Obviously something had happened at the shooting range that trigger Jules to have a major emotional reaction but Steve didn't have any way of knowing. All he could do was hope she hadn't been physically hurt.
At first when Steve moved fast through the hallway in the direction of the shooting range, where he knew Peggy and Jules were going to be spending the afternoon, he very nearly thought it was a false alarm. Everything seemed normal as soldiers leisurely walked the halls, some holding quiet conversations with their peers while others moved silently with files or folders clutched in their hands. Nobody seemed panicked or frightened in the slightest, soldiers shooting him questioning looks as he sped past them down the hall almost leading Steve to think he was overreacting. But the second the base shook beneath his feet, the walls groaning from some unknown source deeper in the building, Steve knew he wasn't.
Something had gone terribly wrong.
As the shaking ceased, Steve glanced at the men around him. It seemed as if nobody wanted to move in fear of what was coming. Many of the men occupying the hall turning and sharing knowing looks with one another, unspoken words shared between them. Everyone knew what made that noise, after all, only one girl in the entire building had the ability to shake the building like that.
The super soldier held his breath as he to stood back to his full height. His chest felt tight with anticipation as they all stood in silence waiting for the building to either shake once more or the speakers to come on and announce false alarm, return to regular duties. Steve desperately wanted to hear those words spoken over the PA, but he knew better.
A low rumble began to fill the hallway, echoing from deeper in the base. It came from the direction of the shooting range, almost sounding like a rockslide building up— countless small impacts merging together to create a near hum that was growing in volume indicating whatever was making the noise was getting closer. Steve watched the end of the hallway with a furrowed brow and narrowed eyes. His internal warning alarm was blaring at full volume with flashing lights. his instincts told him to move, to run and find cover because something big was about to round that corner.
