MONACO, 2012
67 YEARS LATER
The air that night was colder than usual.
Normally, as the sea-side city of Monaco settled into the summer months of May and June, the increased hours of sun would heat the air and keep it warm even hours after it disappeared beneath the horizon and cast the city in the evening shadow.
That night, however, a nippy breeze was carried in from the water that caused a chill to fall over the hill-side. Long-time residents were more heavily affected, grabbing their closest sweaters & blankets to ward off the cold air while the sky moved through the shades of blue to deep black. Windows were closed, balconies tightly shut and curtains drawn to keep the heat in and the chill out. Slowly but surely the city that was famous for glowing golden at night against the hill-side dimmed until just the faintest of starts were able to illuminate the dark sky. One large property, however, maintained it's nightly golden glow as elegant music drifted off into the nightly air, a gala in full swing.
Visitors to the city, those with experience in frigid New York Winters that sit firmly in the below-freezing temperatures for months on end, however, were less affected.
It was easy for this particular visitor to determine who among the party-goers were local and who had travelled for the event simply on their manner of dress.
Those with shorter dresses, a lack of sleeves and a chilled glass of champagne in their hands; temporary travellers, those with permanent homes in much colder climates. Longer dresses, full suit jackets, long gloves & a furry shawl wrapped around their shoulders? Julianna would have guessed they barely left their Mediterranean bubble, only traveling as far as their chartered yacht could go before returning to the Monaco marina.
