coiny

"coiny, when we do find this weakness potion, there's something else you'll have to do..."

"oh yeah? what's up?"

tennis ball glances at golf ball for some sort of signal. she looks at him with remorse, but nods. he turns back to me, sighing. "well, after rose escaped it told us it became stronger than before."

"which...means?"

"which means we can't just throw a potion at it. we have to separate rose from leafy completely-better yet, get rid of rose. the weakness potion will do enough to incapacitate it, we'll just make the doses stronger, but..."

tennis ball pulls out a knife and hands it to me. my smile faded into shock as i took it from him, examining it. the knife just looks like a regular tool used in the kitchen. i look back up at tennis ball.

"you're going to have to destroy the sources-the roses on her eye and hand."

my eyes widen. "wh...what!?"

"i-i'm sorry, coiny, but from what me and golf ball saw, the vines are too strong to be ripped off by hand now-"

i grip the knife tighter. "and-and risk STABBING leafy!?"

golf ball snaps at me. "rose is dangerous, coiny! more lives could be lost if it stays alive with a host! just trust me, i..." her eyes flickered towards tennis ball. "...i would know. besides, if you do accidentally impale leafy-"

"you don't understand how much pressure you're putting me on here! leafy's my best friend-i care about her! you can't just 'kill someone that happens to look like your best friend!' leafy could die because of me! do you understand how much that would hurt!?" i try to laugh at the sarcasm, but i struggle holding a smile as tears welled in my eyes.

tennis ball tries to stop my rambling. "coiny! listen, we can-"

i don't listen. instead, i head towards the exit. "SHUT UP! i-i'm... i'm going to look for her. just so i can say goodbye."

...

"LEAFY!? leafy, please, where are you!? i don't want to do this, please!"

i wish she was here. leafy-rose-it doesn't matter. i just want her here.
i don't care if she's under some sort of spell! i know leafy's still there, i saw it myself! if she could show herself before, she could do it again!

i remember the dispute i had with tennis ball and golf ball. "leafy could die because of me!"
my mind trails back to when leafy was in golf ball's lab. "i don't want to fight leafy."
well, look where we are now! ha ha.

wait...golf ball's lab...

"oh my mint-i still have to go back! i need the antidote!"

i run out of the forest and sprint back to golf ball's lab, nearly crashing into the door.

golf ball yells. "oh my GOLF BALL FACTORY! coiny, you have got to quit scaring us like that! you and your sudden entrances! and-and put down that knife!"

i inhale sharply, trying to gather myself. "OH-my bad. sorry, it's just-um-well it's-i-i'm here to help with the potion again. i'm sorry for getting worked up like that and-and running away all of a sudden. it's really not like me to do that."

tennis ball's eyes widen in acknowledgement. "huh. must be a side effect," he says, flipping through the pages of a book. he turns to golf ball, tapping something on the page with his pen. "hey gb, you might want to add this before coiny tries it."

her face lights up. "oh! you're right!" she reaches for a jar on the shelf before carefully pouring a small amount of the contents inside. "this might be what we're missing...i hope," she mutters. almost instantly, the contents in the flask turned into a bright blue. "this is looking promising...!" golf ball says, picking it up. she hands it over to me. still a bit shaky from before, i tip the bottle and drink.

it tasted so sweet, it felt so revitalizing, i felt like a completely new person. if this was made into a regular drink, i'd have it every day.

the gasps from golf ball and tennis ball interrupt my bliss. "oh my tennis ball factory! coiny, look!" i open my eyes and look down. "all of the vines are gone! if it completely erased this weaker version of rose, it's most definitely strong enough to weaken the source! now let me just write this down..."

i'm glad we found the antidote, but my mind still hangs on the possibility i'll hurt leafy. golf ball notices this, and breaks me out of my thoughts. "hey, coiny."

"um...yeah?"

"we can help her heal. even if you do put her life at risk, i'll do my best to save her. just promise us you'll try to get rid of rose."

i fidget with myself as images of leafy pop in and out of my head.
i remember our first contest-me, leafy, and ice cube riding a boat together. i really don't want to hurt her. all this time we spent together-and it could all end in an instant.
no, she's a strong person! even when she was at her lowest, she still kept her head high! i'll just have to hope i can save her.

"...yeah. i'll try."
