five more minutes, jeez...

"coiny, wake up."

i blink myself awake, adjusting to the sunlight that bled into the room. i sit up and look around. firey stares at me annoyed; he must've been trying to wake me up.

there's a knock at the door. golf ball leans on the doorway, and perks up when she notices i'm finally awake. "hey, you two are feeling better, right?"

i cough and warm up my voice. "...sure." firey nods as well.

golf ball glances to the side. "i hate to ask favors, but do you two mind looking over leafy? me and tb are going out for a while to do some errands. it won't be much-i left a small checklist by her bedside."

before the two of us could muster up a response, golf ball leaves. "okay, thanks! i'll see you guys tonight!"

it's been a few days since we first got to golf ball's lab. the rest of the losers had already left. firey can go back to his normal life (with a new arm cast and a few bandages), but he chose to stay a while longer because "there is no way am i living with my teammates after this." i can breathe easier now and the rest of my body hurts a little less, but leafy still needs to recover. she can get up on her own and speak some words, but she'd still need help.

i get out of my bed. "okay then. well, firey, let's get started."

...

it was just the minimal things: adjusting monitors, refilling medicine, replacing bandages, etc. leafy sat up in her bed now, zoned out and probably poring over the events that had happened. she had a large, visible bandage that wrapped around the lower half of her body, with a dark stain indicating where she had injured herself. her hand, along with her left eye, had been also bandaged. rose must've been fully removed by now.

i kneeled on the ground next to her bed, and placed my head and crossed arms on top of the mattress, staring up at her. i was also thinking about what happened.

she hurt herself because i almost died. does...does that mean something? my eyes widen and i blink the thought away. no, no! you'd feel terrible if you killed your best frie...best friend?

what are we?

are we best friends, or...

i want to ask her.

"hey, leafy-"

"hey, leafy."

the two of us look towards the source of the voice. firey stands at the foot of leafy's bed, anxious yet serious. "we...we need to talk."

i look back at leafy; her face darkens. she moves herself to sit on the edge of the bed beside me. silence fills the room as leafy takes a moment to gather her thoughts. she grabs my arm, gives me a look, and then looks up at firey. "sure."

i get up along with her, and firey gives me a scowl. "without coiny."

i don't want you here either.

leafy takes firey's hand and he leads her out of the room, shutting the door behind them. firey must've been eager to talk, because the two didn't go far before they began talking, allowing me to eavesdrop. i sat on the ground, pressing my ear against the door.

"leafy. i...i know all of this was my fault. you still probably hate me for what i've done to you. i know i shouldn't be asking you for forgiveness, but i'm asking on the small chance that you still want to be friends with me. i still want to. " firey's voice breaks slightly. "well...do you?"

it was quiet. so silent that you could hear leafy breathe when she spoke. "no."

firey clears his throat, his voice wavering. "o-okay. i...i get it."

"i'm...sorry... but," leafy takes another deep breath. "i think we should...take some time away from...each other."

small sniffles could be heard. i can barely make out the words they say now. i stand up, moving away from the door. feet shuffle, and leafy opens the door. light from the outside illuminates the room behind her; firey probably left. leafy looks at me with a blank expression on her face. she wasn't the one crying. yikes.

we look at each other for a moment before i motion to her, giving her an invitation for a hug. our eyes don't break contact, but she leans in and gently wraps her arms around me. i return the gesture.
