chapter four,
𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐋𝐌 𝐎𝐅 𝐃𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐌𝐒

——— AT A LOCAL TAVERN, Triston sat in a back booth with Thor and Erik. An Attendant, or what Erik called, the bartender, sat down three mugs of beer and three shots of whiskey. Erik poured a shot into his mugs and downed it. Triston and Thor hesitantly followed his example, "Seems Darcy's a terrible intern, but a talented hacker," Erik told them.

"What a brilliant laddie," Triston said, a smile of adoration for the Darcy girl. She was smart. And bluntly funny. And Triston liked her. She was his friend.

"Thank you for what you've done, for both of us," Thor told Erik.

"Don't thank me. I only did it for Jane," Erik said as Triston suddenly eyed him.

"Are you in love with her?" He bluntly asked as Thor suddenly tensed, nervous for the older man's answer.

"Of course not!" Erik spat, scoffing at a such ridiculous question as Thor sighed in relief, "Jane's like a daughter to me! Her father and I taught at University together. A good man, but he never listened."

Triston formed a smile, as Jane's father reminded him of his own, "Neither do I," Thor said, and Triston's smile grew while Erik eyed the two in interest.

"I don't know if you're really delusional, and I really don't care. I just care about her. I've seen the way she looks at you," Erik said, causing Thor to smile.

"I swear to you, I mean her no harm," Thor assured.

"Neither do I," Triston added.

"Good. If that's the case, then I'll buy you both one more drink, and you'll leave town. Tonight," Erik said and they both nodded.

They both took a drink from their mugs while a deep frown laid on Thor's face, "I had it all backwards. I had it all wrong," he said as Erik watched him keenly.

As did Triston. It was of surprise. He'd never seen this side of his father before. He was...vulnerable...acknowledging his faults. He was...tolerable. He was different than before...and Triston was starting to wonder if he liked it. He was starting to be the man Lady Sif always told Triston he'd eventually become.

"It's not a bad thing, finding out that you don't have all the answers. That's when you start asking the right questions."

Both Triston and Thor took this in; Thor about everything he'd ever known, and Triston for one particular thing. One person. A person he couldn't shake.

"For the first time in my life, I have no idea what I'm supposed to do," Thor said, which pulled Triston out from his own thoughts.

"Anyone who's ever going to find their way in this world has to start by admitting they don't know where the hell they are," Erik said and Thor nodded.
