chapter twelve,
𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐃𝐀𝐑𝐊 𝐄𝐋𝐕𝐄𝐒——— TRISTON, LADY SIV AND THE OTHERS followed Odin through the halls of the Palace until they entered The Hall of Science; a huge cavernous chamber, and at the center was Yggdrasil, the World Tree.
From there, they entered the Palace library, immediately causing many memories to overcome the young Prince. But he pushed them away as Odin said, "There are relics that predate the universe itself. What lies within Jane appears to be one of them. The Nine Realms are not eternal—" Triston, along with the others, stared at him curiously and confused, "—They had a dawn, as they will have a dusk. But before that dawn, the dark forces, the Dark Elves, reigned absolute and unchallenged."
Once he crossed the room, Odin carefully opened an ancient, beautifully illuminated book and selected a page. Triston gazed at his grandfather oddly before looking at the page, beginning to carefully read it outloud. Lady Siv read it as he spoke while Thor held Jane close to him, both of them looking very concerned.
"Before the eternal night, the Dark Elves come to steal away your light," Triston said, his eyes slowly lighting up in recognition, "These are the stories Aunt Rina told Lidi and I as children."
"Their leader, Malekith, made a weapon out of that darkness. It was called the Aether," Odin continued on, causing Triston and Lady Siv to glance back at him, "While the other relics often appear as stones, the Aether is fluid and ever-changing. It changes matter into dark matter, and seeks out host bodies, drawing strength from their life force. Malekith sought to use the Aether's power to return the universe to one of darkness. But...after eternities of bloodshed, my father Bor finally triumphed; ushering in a peace that lasted thousands of years."
Triston and everyone else stared at him in awe before the Prince mumbled, "Aunt Rina didn't tell us that."
"What happened?" Jane asked.
"He killed them all," Odin answered.
Triston's eyes widened in shock. But his attention quickly went to Lady Siv when she asked, "Are you sure, Allfather?"
When Triston glanced over at his grandfather, his eyes turned into a slight glare to find him staring at Lady Siv offended she would question him. "She asked a question, Grandfather," he said and Odin looked over to find his grandson was quite over his ego. And that he would be cold towards him as long as Lidianna was locked up. If Odin was going to attempt to replace Lidianna with Lady Siv, he might as well respect her.
"The Aether was said to have been destroyed with them, and yet here it is," Lady Siv said as Triston and Odin continued to keep eye contact of such bitterness and pain.
