"How's it feel?
To finally be 21?"
Constance's eyes sparkle
with curiosity
and slight mischief
as we both bite into the pancakes.
I chuckle to myself
and lightly shake my head
as her questions
play in my head.
"It feels..."
I trail off
as a smile takes over
my lips.
"Amazing."
I breathe out a laugh.
"I mean I can't believe it.
Twenty-one?
That's insane."
A grin spreads across her face.
"Well believe it girl.
I mean,
you're a little old now.
But that's okay!"
I roll my eyes,
but my cheeks hurt
at how intensely
I'm smiling.
Silence passes between us
as an onslaught of thoughts
begin to fill my head.
I put my fork down
and run my fingertips
along the condensation
that kisses my glass of water.
My breathing becomes shaky
and I bite my lip
to help ease
the overwhelming surge of feelings
that suddenly courses through me.
"Thank you Constance,"
I say,
tears now sneakily lining
my bottom eyelids.
"I appreciate everything
you've done for me."
She grabs my hand,
her gaze now piercing my own.
"Of course."
She gives me a reassuring smile,
gripping my hand earnestly.
"I am always here for you, Willow."
Her sincerity
tugs at my heart.
I can only nod my head
as I blink my eyes
to rid itself
of its tears.
"Never forget that."
Shaking my head,
I let out a soft laugh.
"I know.
I love you girl."
I smile,
rubbing my eyes
to relieve the sting.
"I love you more."
