Yakko hadn't been taking the news that was given all too well. That night, once King William had arrived with Wakko after quite the trip, he was peacefully sleeping in his arms, a small tuft of his of hair now as white as snow. His memory of all that had happened had been wiped, even any knowledge of his brother's magical powers.
"You mustn't let your emotions and fear overtake you. That will be your most powerful downfall... and the downfall of others.."
"Wakko also mustn't know about your powers. Ever. Neither should your sister ever be reminded of them. It is for the best.."
Those words of wisdom and advice his dad had reiterated caused guilt and more fear to crawl up Yakko's spine, causing him to hide away in his bedroom. He hid away from his siblings, their staff.. and even his parents. One day, however, King William walked to the door of his son's untouched room. Knocks began to echo between the spaces in the hall.
"Yakko, son.. I have something for you.." the king says in a gentle yet tough voice as Yakko sat up against the door with his knees against his chest.
There was a bit of silence on his end. Though, he eventually comes around and stands up, opening the door and taking a few steps back, his hands held down in front of him. His father walks slowly into the room, quickly noticing bits of ice here and there, just some on a windowsill that lays against the window. A heartbreaking expression starts to form, but not before one of relief starts to peek through.
"Yakko.." William says in a gentle tone, now kneeling down in front of the terrified boy with a box in his hands.
"Your mom and I have decided to get these for you to help.."
Just then, after the top of the box was lifted, there were gloves. White as snow, laying in the center, neatly folded. Yakko gently grabs them after a moment, putting them over his hands. It was a perfect fit. Not long afterwards, his dad places the now empty box onto the floor, gently taking his hands into his and looking him into his eyes.
"Now, Yakko.. you must remember these words.." William begins to say.
"Conceal, don't feel.... don't let it show."
"Conceal.. don't feel.. don't let it show.." Yakko repeats, listening carefully to all words being spoken.
Those words would always be something he'd tell himself. All day, every day. However, his self isolation wouldn't dissipate.. it would only stay.. making his fear and power grow stronger every day despite this newly found saying and this new attire he's been gifted, his parents believing that maybe if he was left to his own devices, he would get better. Spring, Summer and Fall would all pass with no signs of life past the door, however, that kept blocking Wakko and Dot from their older brother.
But soon, winter came once more. This gave Wakko and Dot a chance. Wakko rushes with Dot to the bedroom door that's encased their brother day after day. Knocking to the beat of a drum starts.
"Yakko! It's snowing outside! Now we can go play!" Wakko calls out.
There's no answer, response, nothing. A slight frown falls upon the middle sibling and his sister's face until he gets an idea, a smirk now replacing the frown that was once there.
"Do you wanna build some snowmen??" he says, knocking on the door again. This time there's an answer, but not one he was expecting.
"Go away, Wakko.." the voice on the other side states, in a very weary yet serious tone.
Wakko's ears fall and droop as he then grabs his sister's hand and leads them both away from the door. "Ok, bye.."
After some time passes, with multiple attempts having already been tried, another shot is given at getting Yakko out of his room. Knocks to the beat of a drum start once again, Wakko and Dot both standing outside.
"Yakko! C'mon! Let's do something fun!" Dot shouts, Wakko soon playing along and giving his own insight.
"We could.. go mess with Headmaster Otto! Give him the nastiest wedgie of all!" the crazed, very excited brother states, him and Dot soon running with each other down the hall and messing around.
"There's so many things we could do! It's been so lonely recently and.. there's nothing much to do with just the two of us!" Both siblings shout, in unison. However, once more, there is no answer, no response. Only silence.
The two give each other a look after a few minutes, their ears drooping as they realize this attempt has also failed. They walk away to another part of the castle and sit begrudgingly in one of the rooms. Meanwhile, inside Yakko's room, trouble began to stew.
After days of constant nagging to come out, there was one final day of silence. His parents decide to come in and talk to him about his isolation and assure him that things will be okay. However, this only leads to a small bit of chaos, Yakko warning them both and raising his voice, backing up against the wall and holding his hands up against his chest as William and Angelina tried to speak and comfort him. It was at this time that they began to suspect it was the worst decision of their lives to let their son hide away in fear and guilt. It had simmered for too long.
Time then passed once more. Days turned into weeks then into months.. and eventually years. Wakko kept trying to coax his brother out of the room, but Dot had grown out of it. She knew the attempts that were being made had now become useless.
Soon, once King William and Queen Angelina knew their kids were old enough to be by themselves, they made plans to venture off to a neighboring kingdom for a week or two. Wakko and Dot were both thrilled to see that their parents were setting out to go be alone and see something other than the four walls of the castle. Yakko, however, wasn't so sure of their decision.
As they were packing up one early afternoon, Wakko and Dot made sure to give them their farewells and wish them a safe trip.
"I'll see you guys when you get back, I love you.." Dot says, hugging her mom and dad.
"Yeah.. we'll see you soon, we hope you have an amazing trip!" Wakko exclaims, doing the same.
Later, once evening struck and the boat was being packed up, Yakko walks up to his parents, a worried expression on his face.
"..Do you have to go..?" he asks, messing with his gloved hands.
His parents smile, his dad soon placing a hand on his shoulder. "We will be okay.. and so will you.. we will see you when we get back."
Those would be the last words said before both William and Angelina board their boat and set off into the sea. No news or word of anything would come for a while, until one day. Wakko and Dot could be seen speaking with one of the staff, both in shock, then in tears, Dot soon being held by her brother in a comforting hug. Their parents have perished, their boat having crashed into the harsh waves that same night with no reported survivers.
Hours pass by, Dot still in distress over the news, hiding away in her room after the set funeral was over. Wakko walks up to Yakko's door, knocking gently on it before taking a small breath in.
"Yakko.. please.. I know you're still in there. Everyone is wondering where you are.."
"Everyone is telling me to have strength and be patient and I'm trying to but.. it's hard. Please, let me in.."
He then leans back against the door and sinks down to the floor, his knees slowly coming up against his chest.
"It's just the three of us now.. ..what are we gonna do..?"
"...Do you wanna build some snowmen..?"
After this line that's been buried deep in his mind, tears start to run down his face. Just when he needed his brother most, here he was, locked in his room, isolated. As always.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the door, there was Yakko, sitting against it with his knees pulled up against his chest. Tears start to fall as he then places his head down onto his knees, wondering what he's going to do now.. what will he do now?
He didn't have an answer for that yet..
