Mae's POV
I woke up with my eyes puffy red from the lack of sleep and my mind still over filled with my problems. It was the end of summer vacation. Back to school. More like back to classes since all under age citizens are to live inside school territory. I got dressed in usual uniform and headed to the other part of school where there was classrooms instead of bedrooms. I found my first class and went in. I found my teacher standing at the front of the class waiting for all the student to arrive. I sat in the seat next to my best friend, Yesica. The bell rang a few moment after I took a seat and I notice how late I could have arrived. The teacher started by taking role when a golden brown haired boy came in through the door almost out of breath as if he ran all they way to class. He wore a smile on his face, almost a smirk.

"What is your name!" the teacher spat out when she saw the boy was late.

"Uh. Augustus." He said still wearing his silly smile.

"Sit here Augustus!" She said as she pointed at the only empty chair that happened to be next to me.
He made his way to me looking at me with his mischievous little smile and sat down.

"Now please, stop disrupting my class!" Her expression was serious, quite scary as well. She had wrinkles in her face that struck out when she became angry and sockets under her eyes as if she hasn't gotten a good night sleep in a while, and judging by the coffee on her desk, she probably hadn't.

"Hello." My thoughts were interrupted by the boy sittings next to me, Augustus.

I turned my head around to face him "uh. Hi" I slightly smiled

"What's your name?" He smiled at me with the same smirk he walked in with.

"Mae." I smiled awkwardly since I wasn't good at meeting new people.

"Cool. Hello Mae." He smiled at me "My name is Augustus, if you didn't catch that when I came in class." He said sarcastically. I laughed a bit. "But my friends call me 'Gus', or 'August'... But I prefer Gus since August is a name of a month ."

I smiled, but it felt like an awkward smile, "Ok, Gus. Nice to meet you."

He looksed at me in a serious manner."I never said you were my friend."

His words hit me like a punch in the stomach. "Oh... Umm.. Sorry-..." I didn't know what to say, I was too embarrassed I could feel my face turning red.

He smiled. "I was only kiding Mae!, sheesh don't you know what a joke is?" He said slightly laughing

"Well, not many people would consider that a joke." I said back. In many cases other people would be mad if someone pulled a prank on them like this, but I was too relieved to even care. It seemed kind of humorous to me how mean he could seem, but only be acting as a playful way to make friends.... I guess, I couldn't quite figure him out. None the less, I really didn't care, it was the first day of school and I was still half asleep.

"Well sorry if I offended you or hurt your feelings in any way." He said with a gentle smile.

"It didn't, don't worry." I said trying to end the conversation to pay attention in class.

He nodded and shrugged.
•••
Class went on pretty slow after that, Me and Gus didn't have much conversation either, except a few side comments from him and all. Soon class was over, and I walked out of the class to our so called "break"
