Chapter 7 - the diagnosis

The girl lay in the hospital bed, gasping for breath every minute or so, but still not awake. Her sisters sat either side of her, holding her hands. Worried expressions on their faces. Their parents had been taken out if the room to speak to the doctor about what was wrong with their daughter. The mother had been crying, her eyes red and puffy. The dad attempting to stay strong but failing. The sisters were both scared of what was going to happen to their sister. They were both waiting for the terrible news, that they would never see their sister's smile again. Nobody understood why she had done it. Some nurses had said she might have done it by accident, didn't realise what she was doing. Others said the opposite, that she had done it on purpose...
Suddenly the door burst open. There was an angry expression on the dad's face. The mum in tears once again. The doctor, a grave face, avoiding eye contact with anyone in the room.
"What's happened?" asked one of the sisters.
"What is going to happen to Scarlett?" asked the other. The parents looked at each other, then at the doctor. He was the first one to speak, "I am afraid that your sister is very sick," started the doctor. "We don't know exactly what is wrong with her or what happened to her for her to end up like this, but...,". The doctor hesitated.
"But what?" they both asked.
"She is going to have to stay here for a little while. We don't know how long for but hopefully if she stays here for long enough we will make her better. But you are going to have to live without her for a little bit," said the doctor. The sisters looked at each other, at their sick sibling lying in bed. Tears ran down their faces, they did not know how they could live without their sister for a day, let alone weeks or months. One of them turned to the doctor once again.
"What is really wrong with her though? What is her illness called?" she asked. The doctor hesitated, unsure whether to tell the young girls. He looked at the parents, asking for permission to tell their children. They seemed to not mind. He turned back to the girls. "Your sister is in a coma,"...
