I lay on the ground, looking at Crystal in shock. What did he mean? I struggled to get up but my legs were trapped under the heavy spell book. As I slowly moved it, Crystal asked "Red, can you talk?". I got up and cleared my throat. If this worked my life would finally be better, even if I had had to give something in exchange.
"I.....think......I.....can...," I spoke. "Oh my gosh, Crystal!!! It worked!!". I lunged myself at my unicorn friend, hugging him in relief. Tears of joy ran down my face. I would finally be free from Amanda's grip! I stepped back but my smile disappeared as I saw Crystal's face.
"But Scarlett, what about your eyes?" Crystal asked, still serious and unsmiling. I'd forgotten about that. What was wrong with them?
"What?" I asked. It couldn't be that bad. Crystal said nothing but nodded towards my school bag that was still on my shoulder. I opened it up, confused, and took my mirror out of my makeup bag. I, slowly, opened it and held it up to my eyes. I gasped as I saw what were now my pupils and the mirror fell out of my hands, shattering on the ground. Hesitantly I bent down to the ground and picked it back up. Through the cracks and missing pieces of mirror, I saw my eyes. But they weren't mine. The pupils were dark slits and instead of my usual emerald colour, surrounding my pupils, they were a murky, golden green. These eyes aren't mine, they're cats.
"What happened Crystal? Why have I got cat eyes?" I asked, worried. Why did this always happen to me?
" I don't know, red. I guess that was what the book took, your eyes," Crystal said. Under his breath I heard him say "I knew this was a bad idea," but I didn't answer him. What had I done? I may have my voice but now I couldn't go back home or dad would know where I'd been. Suddenly I realised something, what if this affected my powers as well? I rolled my sleeves up and held out my hands. I breathed in and out. Please work, please work, please work!!! I felt my hands heat up. I opened my eyes and saw my hands glowing a red-orange colour. Yes! I thought. A small flame appeared but that was it. It flickered for a while and then went out. I tried it again and again and again. But nothing worked. It was so unfair. Why could I not have my voice and my powers? My powers were the only thing that made me special. They made me different from everyone else. And now they were gone...
Tears pricked my eyes and I held my head in my hands. All I wanted to do was scream. Scream until I couldn't anymore. There were too many thoughts going through my head, I had to get away from the book, away from here...
