Maryam is on her bed, with her back leaned on the headboard; a pillow on her lap, with her laptop on top.
Hajiya Binta walked into the room and saw her daughter watching a show on her laptop.
Hajiya Binta sat on the bed. "How are you?"
A small smile appeared on Maryam's lips as she closed her laptop and focused on her mother. "Mummy, what are you talking about?".
"Mairo, I'm your mother, I've noticed you since Inaaya's wedding - it has been a week already. Your mind is somewhere else,".
"Is nothing, Mummy, just work,".
"Someday, I'm sure you'll let me know what's bothering you. I want to talk to you. Your father's relatives want you to get married to Yazid,".
"Yazid? Marr.. Marr.. I should marry Yazid?".
"Yes Yazid, they want to fix an alliance. They will come and give the bride price,".
"What? I don't have feelings for Ya Yazid. I adore him as a brother and the only feelings I have for him," said Maryam. "Gaskiya bana sonshi (I really don't like him) and no one will force me to marry him,".
"Mama na (my mother) When will you realize that you are old enough to get married? Are you not willing to accept this alliance because you love someone else?".
"Yes Mummy, I'm in love with someone else. There's someone that I like, I can't stop thinking about him because he has entered my mind and heart. I have to confess that I love him, mummy, if the way I feel is love,".
"Shi yana sonki ne toh? (Is he in love with you?) Who is he?".
"I don't know who he is, but I know his name is Abaan Muazam,".
"Don't tell me that he's the son of the former governor, Muhd Muazam. His mother is from... England.".
"If you glance at him, you won't say he's from Nigeria. He has a unique accent as well,".
"Uwata yar mummy... Forget about him, he's way above our league. For your peace of mind and mine, forget about him, Okay?" Hajiya Binta held her hand, giving Maryam a motherly touch. "Mama na, they are other guys our status, who would love to have you as their wife, because you are so beautiful,".
Maryam's eyes widened as her eyebrows rose, She bit her lips as she looked at her mother's lovely eyes. "I'll try to get him out of my mind, but I don't want you to get me married to someone I don't like,".
Hajiya Binta emitted a deep sigh. " We have to be careful because you know how your father's relatives are. Hajiya Jamila is the only one who will understand. I'll go and talk to her,".
"Thank you,".

Maryam sitting in her office, looking at the papers on the table. Her laptop opened showing a document she was working on.
Her attention was still on the papers when she heard a knock at the door. "Come in," she replied.
"Assalamu Alaikum," She heard a voice that was familiar to her, already accustomed to her heart and mind. She raised her head and the corners of her lips turned into a small smile as their eyes met.
"You again," he said in surprise, closing the door.
"Please have a seat,".
Abaan sat on one of the delicate seats meant for people like him; clients. "Thank you," he replied.
"What brings you here?"
"I'm here to open an account. Last time I came. I had to leave because of an emergency,".
Maryam took out a paper from a drawer and handed it to him. "Fill out the form,".
Abaan collected the paper. "Do you have a pen?".
Maryam's eyebrows rose in surprise - She can't believe he doesn't have a pen with him, knowing he'll fill out a form.
"I know, I should have brought a pen...,".
She took a black pen from her pen holder and gave it to him.
"My favourite, I love writing with a black pen,".
As he filled out the form, Maryam stared at him. She realized what she had been feeling was more than a crush, and wondered if she was in love with him.
Abaan filled out the form and gave it back to her. "Where is the Nepa bill or driving license?" Maryam asked, keeping the paper among other filled-out forms.
"I brought my passport and NEPA bill last month.,".
Maryam collected them, taking his filled-out form with a stabler. She is about to stable the Nepa bill and passport to the form; she noticed his name on the paper. "Jalal Muazam. I thought your name is...,".
"Abaan, my name is Jalal Muhd Muazam, Abaan is my other name,".
There is a brief moment of silence. "What's the beautiful lady's name?" He asked.
Maryam straightened her posture on the seat, "Maryam Abu Bakr,".
"Maryam," he tested the name on his tongue and said "what a beautiful name for an outstanding lady,".
"Thank you,".
"I think we're meant to be friends the way we've been meeting, so can I have your number?".
Maryam chuckled, "Sure. My number is 0803465....,".
As she carried her phone off the desk, it started ringing. 'Abaan. M.'.
