Rachel's POV,

It was dark out, and I had left school some hours ago. Rory was inside fixing some dinner, and I trotted out my house's back door to go take out the trash.

What a day... I thought. I never ended up seeing Ira again during the rest of my school day, so I just proceeded to replay the events in my head.

Slamming the black trash bag into the alleyway's bin, I remembered how sad and distraught Ira looked when he saw me on the floor with Jason. He seemed so confused and angry, and I wanted to blame myself for ruining his day. My poor Ira... did he really think he was that replaceable?

A sudden tiny rock was kicked my way, and I felt it thump against my shoes. Someone was here with me.

I swiveled around and my eyes met the cold, blue-haired mercenare. Ira was standing in the corner where he seemingly appeared out of nowhere, and I heard myself gasp.

"Ira!" I exclaimed cheerfully, letting the bin close behind me. I ran up to him, but his eyes remained fixated on the pavement.

"Ira, I'm so glad you came tonight," I told him.

I watched him kick another pebble and grimace. He nodded his head, shoved his hands in his pockets, but still no answer from him. I'm 99% sure this is about earlier, so I try to poke around the subject.

"Hey... about earlier... I don't think we got to finish talking."

His eyes then fixated on me and my heart quickened; I was getting somewhere.

"What's there to talk about?"

"Oh, well..." I said nervously, biting my lip. I had to make sure I said this the right way; Ira is a mercenare, after all.

"What was that all about?" I asked him. "You seemed really upset back there, more as Ira than a servant of King Mercenare..."

Ira scoffed and kicked an empty soda can on the floor lightly.

"Pfft," he looked down, "I have no idea what you're talking about."

Ira could be so dense sometimes, but being the glitter girl who spent the most time with him, I was able to pick through the sarcasm and get to the matter.

"You picked on Jason because he sat next to me, right? You didn't like him trying to impress me," I replied to his lie.

I watched him as he began to frown, picking at his nails. His discomfort intensified as I approached him and attempted to make eye contact.

"I heard what that distain said," I let him know. "And I wasn't a fool before it, either. I know when people have crushes on me. Jason is no exception."

I raised a gentle hand towards his shoulder to comfort him, but was met with a cold response.

"Okay, I get it," he spewed angrily, jerking away from my body. "You're popular, guys like you, and you know it. And I made that distain to target scrawny wimpy kids like him."

I couldn't believe my ears. Ira... being... honest? Although he wasn't happy about it, he was telling the truth. He tries to think guys who flirt with me don't deserve me so that he will stay on top.

But what he doesn't know is... he always will...

Ira's POV,

I had hoped my facade was enough to make her believe that I didn't give a shit, but my eyes met with hers and I saw them twinkle. That little twinkle of hope she always had whenever I gave away some information that I had been trying not to.
