"Amelia dinners ready!" Amelia's mother Rebecca called up to her from the stairs in the kitchen. The woman's English accent making her sound a little angry as she shouted up again. "Amelia your food is getting cold! Your father and I have already ate, get down here!".
Amelia bolted down the stairs skipping a few as she went. "Sorry mom, Leo got in the closet again and got to the top shelf. Had to get the stool to get him down." The girls American accent contradicting her mothers English one as the girl was smiling guiltily as her mother told her off. "Do tell me why we got you that cat again. Now Amelia go eat!" Her mother said sternly and the girl ran off to the table a big grin on her face.
The girl pulled the chair out and sat down. She dug into the steak and veggies on her plate. And with her mouth full she said, "So dad what's the times union got to say today." Her mother smacked her on the back of her head as she walked over to the sink to clean the dishes. "Swallow your food before you talk young lady." Amelia swallowed her food. Her father laughed at the conversation between his wife and his daughter. "Well today it says the Hubble telescope successfully made it outside of earths orbit yesterday. Now let's talk about something more fun. How are we to celebrate your 11th birthday in five days." "Movies!" The girl spat out immediately. "We NEED to go see Tremors!" Her father laughed. "Then this year we shall go see Tremors. It's showing tomorrow so we'll go tomorrow." "Those movies are going to give her nightmares, David" Amelia's mother chimed in. "Aww it should be alright, right Amelia!"
"Yep!" Amelia said very excitedly.
"See how excited she is love. It'll be fine." Her father said extending the fine dramatically.
"As long as she doesn't come crying to me." Her mother said still not turning around.
"I don't cry anymore. I'm all grown." Amelia said a pout on her lips.
"Sure you are sunflower." Her father said as he got up and ruffled her hair. He then set the news paper down in the table and walked away humming. He headed into the living room where he placed a record on the record player. The records case said ABBA/ARRIVAL.
And a certain song started playing. A smile rose on Amelia face as she headed off to the living room after putting her plate by the sink. In his chair her father sat and the lyrics to the song started playing. Amelia sat on the couch putting her feet on the arm and laying back. She pulled a book from the side table on the front it said Lord Of The Rings. Amelia ran her fingers over the cover feeling the title lifting off the book. She then put the book back onto the side table and jumped to her feet. "You know Dad something strange happened earlier." Her dad opened his eyes. "Really, do tell now." Amelia sat back down her head in her hands as she looked right at her father. "Well I was looking for a hair tie and then all of a sudden there was one in my hands. It was almost magical. It was like I made it go into my hands with just my mind." The girl fell back once again. "It was magic dad, Magic I tell you!" She said a loudly. Her mother then walked into the room her footsteps heavy. "YOUNG LADY WHAT HAVE I TOLD YOU! THERE IS NO TALKING IF MAGIC IN THIS HOUSE! Do you hear me!" Amelia's mother said looking very angry. "Sorry mama." Amelia's head hung from her shoulders.
Anything magic related had always been something Amelia's mother never likes to hear about and when ever Amelia talked magic her mother would scold her. Although Amelia didn't mind at this point she knew it was some kind of trigger for her parents and she always regretted talking about it right after she did. "Sorry mama." Amelia repeated again as she felt a piece of herself crumble and sink deep inside.
The room was tense after Amelia's mothers outburst so Amelia had gone up to her room with the excuse of working on her homework before bed. Although it wasn't a total excuse she did finish her math homework due tomorrow. Her cat Leonardo Dicaprio meowing and rubbing up against her leg for attention. "Jeez Leo, your acting like I haven't looked at you in weeks." She continued to smile down at her cat as she pet him. She giggled when he pushed his head into her hand. Then there was a knock at the door to which Leo left to go greet the visitor.
Amelia removed her headphones and placed them on her desk, next to the light blue Sony Walkman they were connected too. Amelia paused the song and called out to the person behind the door, "Come on in." She smiled as her mother peaked in her room and said goodnight. "See you in the morning sunflower." Her mother smiled back at her the turned the lights in Amelia's room off. Amelia walked over to her bed turning on the lap on her nightstand. She then saw Leo making his way over to her bed, she watched him as he hopped up on her twin mattress and curled up by the foot of her bed.
Amelia walked over to her closet grabbing her pajamas and and putting them on. As soon as her pjs were in she rushed into bed and under her covers, moving so she and Leo were comfortable. She then reached behind her and turned off the lamp. "Goodnight Leo, and goodnight Leonardo." She said looking up at the wall her bed was against and blowing a kiss to the wall. It was covered in photos of her and her friends and the actor Leonardo Dicaprio, not her cat. (The cat pictures were above her desk.) Although her mind was spinning a little Amelia was able to fall asleep easily that night.
