Rue

The body at my feet was writhing in pain. Unable to live yet never able to fully die. I had doomed another creature to a fate worse than death. Even through the haze of euphoria, I could hear something approaching at a rapid pace. My instincts kicked in and sent me flying through the air.

'Darcy,' a gravel voice shrieked. The piercing sound felt like it was burrowing into my ear.

I held my breath.

'Spiteful,' it felt like the familiar voice was pointing the accusation in my direction. But as I peaked through my fingers, I saw that it was nestled beside the stricken form.

I honed in on the curvature of his face. Surprisingly the vampire let me.

'Hello again.' I smirked.

My hands instinctively went to my mouth. I pressed my lips together.

'Rue.' His golden eyes sparkled. It was difficult to see his real face. Now he knew I was there, he was wearing a disguise once more. There was one thing he couldn't change, the resonance of his gorgeous voice.

'You remember me,' I rose to my feet and brushed the dirt off my clothes. There was no way I would let another vampire make me feel like nothing.

His eyes danced around my face and dropped down to my body a few times.

'Hardly fair,' my breath hitched. 'You hide everything about yourself yet want to see every inch of me.'

'Knowing your enemy is part of the battle,' he smirked again.

Every time the vampire looked at me, his body language changed as if electricity was flowing through both of us.

'Sorry about your friend.'

'Where?' He laughed.

My jaw dropped.

'No big loss there.'

'The alliance,' I gasped.

'That's the least of your problems,' his eyes flashed as the entire area filled with the glowing rage of a million vampires.

I bit down on my lip so hard that I drew blood. A foolish thing to do when I was standing in a lair filled with millions of vampires. My eyes swept over their forms. Their illusions were strong but somehow, I could see through them all. All but one.

'Everyone always wants what they can't have, but what if it was something you were never meant to have. Something that would ruin you,' he ran his smooth fingertips along my arm. 'We should let this one go.'

'Why?' Malice pushed her way to the front.

'Aren't you supposed to be on my side?' I cringed as their leader gave me a death stare, I bit my lip and shrunk into myself.

'Unrequited love sucks,' his eyes flashed as he met Malice's challenge head-on.

'Oh great, the old fart that can't even suck a lemon. Shouldn't you be dust by now grampire?'

'So soft that I was the one who killed you!' He snapped back. 'Why is it that you're still standing here?'

'On a blood moon with an Aludra Star anything can happen.' Her eyes swept over me. 'My malice was the reason the humans were altered into spiteful creatures. So I will take responsibility for their actions.'

I looked at the bite on Malice's neck and gasped. 'You and you and it was you and I shouldn't be there.'

'Insightful as always.' Gem snickered.

'Sister please help me.'

They all looked at me like I had lost my mind.

'I'm a spiteful and we have an alliance. From now on, don't come after me and I won't come after you. Okay, great, bye now.' Before Gem could run, Malice grabbed her by the collar.

'You leave when I say you can, you speak when you're spoken too, not about. Understand?'

'Sir yes sir sorry sir madam.'

I grabbed Malice's fingers and wrenched them off. 'I made you mad, I shall take responsibility for your actions. For the mess you made of other people's lives.'

'How noble, I especially like the part where you make it all my fault.' Malice sneered. 'It's too late now.'

'I will go with you willingly now but if you try to take me,' I snapped as I snuggled into her shoulder. 'I'll fight you every step of the way.'

'So be it.'

'I except that I need to be punished but please not by her,' I whined. The creatures were long gone. Only one remained.

'No one cares that you bit Darcy Bennett. He'll not be missed.' Fox shrugged. 'A long time ago, I tried to pull Malice Rancour into line. It didn't work. When I tried to fix it, I made it worse. The spite that was unleashed so long ago has only been building.'

'For how long?'

'A thousand years.'

'Oh that's not too bad, wait what?' I blushed. 'That's a thousand, years not minutes?'

'Where do you live, is it nice there?'

'Yes,' I tried to hide in my jumper but it only covered my chin. 'Go on please. Thank you, sorry.'

'It's not the werewolves we fear or even the spiteful clan, it's Malice Rancour.'

'Why are you weaker than a werewolf?'

'The hatred that was released at the peak of the blood moon can't be destroyed. It can only be past on. If we were to truly get rid of Malice Rancour then one of us would have to take on that burden. Then an enemy the likes of which we could never defeat would be free to wreak havoc forever.'

'But she reveals in the power and hurt that she causes, surely someone with a purer intent might be able to control it better.'

'Intent? I had no malice in my heart when I attempted to destroy her. Yet she's a being of her own creation. No one can swallow a monster without becoming the monster.'
