Rue

Foaming waves lapped over my feet. The wind whistled through my ears. I could taste the salt in the air. As I waded further, the power of the sea started to overtake me. The water smashed over my ankles and threw me one way before sucking me back the other. I stumbled forward, thrown off balance by the tumultuous force.

'You look like you've forgotten how to walk,' a sparkling image of brilliance flooded my vision.

'I can't swim,' I attempted to shield my eyes with my hand but it felt like the creature was corrupting my mind.

The illusion warped as the vampire laughed. 'You do realise where you are, right?'

'I know what you are, you can drop the act.'

'Name's Fox, I don't drop the act for anyone.'

'Rue Ky, why?'

'When I was myself,' I pursed my lips. 'I lost more than I gained. So I change everything about myself.'

'That level of self-hatred would take years to unpack.'

'Indeed, so I don't bother. You should try it sometime.'

'You can tell?' I stumbled forward as the water pulled me in, mouth agape. Water wormed its way into my lungs and made my retch.

It was a sire that reached out and steadied me. 'That you're weighed down by yourself. If you're trying to keep it a secret, you're not doing so well.'

'I'm your enemy,' I attempted to take back my arm.

If you choose to run into the water: Baywatch jog over to page 102...

The warmth of the touch was something I didn't want to lose.

'Considering how close I am to my number one enemy,' the sire pointed at his face and giggled. 'It'd be uncomfortable if you weren't.'

I swallowed back my fear. 'I'm already in trouble.'

'What for?'

'For being me.'

'Ah,' his eyes shone; I could see him clearly now, he was just a man. 'The worst crime indeed.'

'I'm an outsider,' I crinkled up my nose. 'I think about things that no one else does, I don't do what everyone else does. I'm a weirdo. A professional loser by trade.'

He brushed his lips against mine and whispered, 'Where were you ten seconds ago?'

'I was sitting here,' my lips went numb as ants crawled around in my belly. 'Thinking the same things and getting nowhere, when I was filled with so much malice it felt like my insides were being torn apart.'

'Well,' the vampire caressed my arm with his claws.

Oops why did I think he was human? He wasn't. Things were going from bad to worse. I needed to get out of there.

'On a blood moon anything can happen.'

'How did you...' I looked around the area but I was alone. It felt like I was dreaming. Half my face was asleep. I subtly poked my cheek.

I jolted awake in bed. It was a nightmare but not all of it. My roof was missing. A constant stream of water was hitting my face but hey I'm a deep sleeper.

'Great,' I swung my legs out of bed and stumbled towards my kin. Hoping for the day when I would feel normal, awake or alive. Anything at all.
