The best way to begin writing about surviving in a foreign land would be to ask the question, "why?" yes! Why would anyone want to travel to another country in the first place? Why anyone would choose a life of loneliness or absenteeism from familiar surroundings to meet a different culture and reality? Why would anyone want to choose the unknown over the known? And so much more! Living abroad can broaden your horizons, and the extra language you pick up is an amazing skill that will come in handy one day. I feel that language opens barriers between people and allows us to connect. There are numerous benefits of traveling that ensure that our lives are made better and happier in several ways.
It was Saint Augustine who wrote that "The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page". I agree because traveling alone can open up lessons and experiences you would never have got from any university course. You will most definitely learn about the culture of the country you visit, the thinking, habits, traditions, and history of the locals as well. Traveling to a foreign land will make you begin to appreciate how so unique your culture is. When I first left Nigeria for the Philippines, I was met with a difference in culture that I keep being grateful for the culture I missed back at home. A section of this book will be dedicated to knowing the dos and don'ts of some countries, including the Philippines. A part of what traveling does to you makes you learn a lot about yourself. You will begin to observe how you see the world differently and how you see your country. Your ignorance of how the world operates or how things work in other places will surely stare at you. Your language skills, orientational and social skills will also stare at you.
Being tolerant of other people's cultures, religions and choice is perhaps one of the most crucial lessons you will ever get in your traveling. Your survival in a foreign land might depend on how you interpret and react to people's cultures, religion, sexual orientation, choices, and so on. Traveling sure will make you more open and accepting. In traveling also, you get to be exposed to unforgettable moments and experiences. Whether you want to visit old churches, mosques, museums, or visit the ocean or beaches, the zoo, amusement parks, and numerous other beautiful places, traveling to a foreign land will sure change your life.
When you have gotten tolerant, experienced life with a different culture, and more, you become more confident and independent. You will suddenly realize that you can cope with a lot of unexpected situations. You will realize that you can survive without all that help that is always available for you at home. In a foreign land, your survival will be because you discovered also that you are much stronger and braver than you have expected. Your motivation to succeed will grow even as you improve your language skills and gain useful knowledge in the process. In the midst of all these, there will still be questions to ask especially given the challenges of traveling to a place that is not familiar. This book is a journey to the journey of travelers! Keep reading!
