"WHERE are we going?" Vance asked, staring out the window of Max's car watching trees they drove by.

it was a warm evening in Denver, meaning soon the moon would make its upcoming appearance.

"i've got something to show you" is all she said, though the boy was curious as to why she suddenly wanted them to get out of the house.

it was very out of the blue, Vance couldn't help but have an itching feeling that whatever it was that caused Max to do this would change things for them.

or maybe he was overreacting, he wasn't quite sure.

Max glanced at Vance, that face she'd grown to love staring out with a small, but noticable smile on his lips.

his eyes were her favorite, so blue it often reminded her of the california waves that she once seen when visiting her family.

there was always a glimpse of warmth, with a hint of softness in his eyes whenever he looked at Max.

and that's why she couldn't.

she couldn't tell Vance.

she couldn't involve Vance in her mess.

he didn't deserve it.

she adored him too much.

there was a defeaning silence in the car, which was pretty unusual since Max would always start up their conversations or blabber on about the most randomest things.

"Vea, what's wrong?" Vance wondered aloud, with a frown forming on his lips.

as the silence went on, Vance grew more concerned, he laid his hand ontop of her free hand. "Vea, did something happen?"

Max stopped the car, putting it into park. "i'm okay" she whispered, making eye contact with the boy.

"just trust me on this" she said, before getting out of the car.

Vance followed her actions, feeling the cool air against his skin as soon as he opened his door. he saw acres of green with a pretty contrast from all of the different types of flowers scattered around the area, "we're at a field?"

Max gently grabbed his hand with a smile, "you haven't seen the best part"

Vance followed her wordlessly, taking the chance to admire the girl he grew close with over the years.

he wasn't an observant person.

not at all.

but when it came to Max, it was different.

he suddenly felt an arm wrap around him, bringing him out of his personal thoughts.

"look at the view" she said, eyes already trained on the sky.

various neon colors were blending together so graciously, as the sun was finally beginning to rest.

then, soon the moon would be taking over.

though Vance's only focus was on her. he saw the way Max's skin seemed to glow even more with the mix of colors in the background.

if Vance was a painter, Max would be his muse.

"i found this view after the last time we'd met, i hoped that i could show you this the next time i seen you, but you know plans had changed" she explained, moving to wrap her arms around her best friend.

Max dipped her head into the crook of his neck closing her eyes, basking in the comfortable silence between them.

"i wish we could stay like this forever" he whispered, enjoying the closeness of the lady who unknowingly stole his heart.

at the mere sound of his voice, (though he couldn't see it) her eyes, lips and spirit smiled all at once. smiles so universal that even a newborn would know it by heart.

for a few moments, Max felt utter bliss. she always did when she was by Vance's side - but she quickly felt her spark begin to dim.

tomorrow, she would have to betray Vance.

she would have to break the heart she yearned for and treasured so much.

but god did she not want to.

if it were up to her, she would stay like this forever; melting in his arms, a variety of neon colors layed out across the sky, and the boy she loved to gaze with her.

it was all too perfect.

Max and Vance were too perfect.

it was set in stone to be destroyed. two stray souls that were never meant to cross each other's paths, managed to do exactly that on what we simply call a 'limb'.

Max Havea held the key to Vance's heart.

but did she have the guts to open it?

it was all too soon. too beautiful. too perfect.

a true, whole-hearted case of the classic, heartbreaking trope that all of us resent to our very core - right person, wrong time.

oh how she wished fate hadn't decided this were the way things would end for them. if the trials that had ran through weren't to happen, then maybe.

just maybe they would have a chance at being together.

"Vea" he whispered, pulling away to put his hands on the side of her face - eyes glimmering with adoration.

which didn't go unnoticed by Max.

"can i kiss you" he asked, in such a gentle tone that made Max just want to cry.

so she did.

fat tears began to stream down her face, in both happiness and sadness. cause she knew, that once things ran it's course - only she would have memory of this moment between them.

god she wished that Vance would be able to recall this fond moment of theirs.

though it was inevitable.

"yes" Max spoke, closing the space between their lips.

so she kissed Vance for the first and possibly last time she ever could.

____
i cried.
