Fanfiction.net is a very old fanfic web site, not the oldest, but one of the big three modern sites. It is useful for older fandoms like Harry Potter but very bare when it comes to never fandoms like My hero Academia.
Well, as modern as this technical dumbster fire gets. FFN is buggy, the UI is just old, and the amounts of posts on r/Fanfiction I've read about FFN being down or not really working makes me wonder how that site is still going.
My first FFN account, I made just to read. I used the FFN app. The second, because stupid me lost access to the first one, I did try to post something on there.
I don't know if it was because I used the app, I did not own a pc back then, and still don't I use a laptop, I had no idea how. It was so complicated. The fact that my English back then was still rather useless didn't help.
I did once post something.
The only comment I got on there was a hate comment. I wrote a short One Shot, a scene between two characters. My take from this was that FFN dislikes One Shots.
But now, I guess FFN just has more haters and assholes.
Considering that FFN has hardly any to nearly none modration, I am not surprised.
FFN is a headache, because everytime I click on a tab which a fanfic I want to read, this stupid captcha thing starts. Or when I tried to reset my password, that process on is own is already shit, I had this captcha thing 4 times in 3 minutes!
Now, my biggest gripe with FFN.
The shit show has no reading list! Only following it or to favourite it.
On desktop when following, this means I only can read the fic if it gets updated, becaus eonly then it appears in the list. Favouring it, lesser annoying, but that means that stat is kinda... not very telling. Do people actually like the writing or just fave it to mark it for later?
I used to ''collect'' recommendations via links from Reddit, and still do, actually. Due to this, many tabs collected on my phone. The AO3 ones, I just clicked 'mark for later' and the site registered it. On desktop, these fics where listed. On FFN tabs, if I followed them, as well as favouring them as a test, they weren't available on the desktop.
I then reinstalled the app. Most good things come from the app, so it will be the main topic of the next chapter.
The last complaint I have:
There is no real tagging system. Searching specific fics, specific in the sense of "this kind of plot", not "this ship", does not work!

Why I love Wattpad, tolerate AO3 and hate Fanfiction.net
RandomI started my Fanfiction "career" on Wattpad. A few months ago I joined the Fanfiction subreddit and learned that most of these users think lowly of Wattpad but highly of AO3 and Fanfiction.net. I understand some complains, but there are things Wattp...
