Once Upon a Time

Once upon a time,

I thought you truly loved me.

I used to believe

In happily ever after.

When fairytales were more than fantasies,

When I dreamed of whisking you away

To a castle of our own.

But I was not the knight

In this fairytale of ours.

No, I was the dragon,

Having stolen you away,

Doomed to be slain

By one worthy of your hand.

A knight in shining armor,

A well-placed sword between my scales,

And I watched you slip away

To find an ending of your own.

My story ended here,

Watching the treasure I had guarded—

Your laugh, your love, your smile,

Once given to me freely,

Now saved solely for another.

Once upon a time,

You were a princess,

But I was not your prince.
