A loud, piercing scream jerked me awake from my sleep. I tore my eyes open and glanced around my dark room. I'd worked a night shift and I was trying to catch up on sleep but the noise wasn't letting me. Whitney's scream increased in pitch and the stomps of her feet drew nearer. A groan escaped me as I reached for a pillow and threw it over my head.
The third trimester was kicking me in the behind. The lower back pains, occasional Braxton hicks, constant tiredness, frequent urination, swollen feet and my extremely sensitive nipples made the pregnancy journey exhaustive. If I got into the right position and was at peace enough to fall asleep, I'd hate to be disturbed by anything. Which was why thoughts of throwing Whitney out of the apartment flashed into my mind.
My door flung open and Whitney burst into my room, yelling my name. Oh, God. I lifted my head, the pillow dropping down to my side. I shut my eyes and shielded my face with my hands. Whitney had taken the liberty of pushing my curtains back and letting in sun streams of the warm afternoon sun.
I sat up and dropped my hands unto the bed with a huff. "What is it?"
"Take a look at this," she shoved her iPhone into my hands. She settled down at the edge of the bed and bounced her feet against the bed frame.
I shot her a wary glance before lifting her phone to my eyes. Her screen was set on her profile page on our medical school website. What is this? I looked back at her with furrowed brows.
"Okay?" I held the phone out to her.
She rolled her eyes and pushed the phone back to me. "Scroll down,"
I kissed my teeth. "Can't you just tell me?" I let out a heavy sigh that weighed down my shoulder and lifted the phone back to my eyes and scrolled down. She leaned forward and tapped the bottom of the screen with her fingernail.
You have no outstanding debts.
My eyes grew wide and I dropped the phone on my bed. "Oh my God!" I slapped a palm over my mouth. "You've cleared your loans. When? H-How?"
She shook her head, grinning. "That's the thing. I didn't pay in anything, I mean I was planning to make a deposit" she picked up her phone from the bed. "I went to check how much I had left to pay and I- I saw this"
My head dropped to the side and my forehead creased downward. "What?" I leaned back and reached for my phone on my nightstand. "Is it some kind of glitch?" I muttered as I unlocked my phone.
Whitney folded her lips inward, suppressing a giggle and gestured that I checked my own profile.
"What?" I narrowed my eyes at her and then focused on logging into the portal. I skipped all the newsletters and went right to the student's financial aid section. With bated breath, I scrolled down to the bottom of the screen.
You have no outstanding debts.
"Oh my God," My jaw dropped open and I shoved my phone into Whitney's hand. I climbed onto my knees and sat back unto the back of my legs. "What does this mean? Is – Is it like some kind of error?"
Whitney broke into a wide grin. "You see, I thought the same thing as well. I called the school and they said it wasn't a mistake. It was paid off by someone"
"What?" my whole face scrunched up in confusion and I reared my head backwards. "Why? Did they tell you who it was?"
Her smile faltered a bit and she smacked her forehead with the pad of her fingers. "How are you not getting this? Nick. Did." She spelt out, hitting the blade of her hand against her other palm. "Girl, your man paid off our loans"
