Chapter 3

Donnie

What happened?  Donnie’s head hurt.  His eyes were still closed; he didn’t want to open them.  Everything came back to him at once.  He was battling someone.  Logan?  No, they were using a Vaporeon.  But his traveling companion had been there.  A girl.  He had been battling a girl.  The one he saved after she had fallen.  Her voice came back to him.  “I know who you are.  You’re the boy from Icurris City, Josh.”  That’s when he blacked out.  She thought he was Josh.  How could anyone think he was that idiotic, cruel jerk?

“So…his name is Donnie?”  The girl’s voice.

            “Yep.”  That was Logan.

“And he’s also from Icurris City, like Josh?”  The girl sounded somewhat confused.

“Uh-huh, he’s known Josh his whole life apparently.”

“Are they friends?” the girl asked.

“Nope, been rivals since they were kids.”

Longer than that.  Donnie thought to himself.  He had given Logan a full rundown about his relationship with Josh after they started traveling together two weeks earlier.  He hadn’t ever traveled with anyone before, but Logan had asked if they could go together.  Donnie had been helping him train and was honestly enjoying his company.

There was a sharp scraping noise coming from his left.  Slowly, Donnie opened his eyes and turned his head.  He was lying on a sleeping bag in the camp that he and Logan had found before seeing the girl.  He now concluded that it was her camp.  The girl, Ellen he recalled, and Logan where facing away from him.  Beyond he could see Logan’s Totodile scratching a tree with a Breloom nearby.

“You see, by scratching the tree, it strengthens both the claws and arm muscles.  Eventually, Totodile will be able to cut through the wood without any trouble,” Ellen instructed Logan.

Donnie felt something.  Envy, he thought.  Logan hadn’t wanted his advice at first; Donnie had to nag the boy to get him to listen.  Now he was just going along with this stranger like she was the champion.  He stood shaking slightly.  “Totodile won’t be able to do anything like that until it evolves.”

The two turned to him.  Logan looked slightly relieved.  “Hey, you’re up.  How do you feel?”  Ellen said nothing, but her eyes showed some kind of feeling.

“Nothing hurt but my pride.”  Donnie joked and glanced at Ellen quickly then back at Totodile.  “But, like I said, he won’t be able to do any real damage to the tree until he evolves.  Last I checked you weren’t in any hurry to make him evolve, Logan.  Or did this girl convince you otherwise?”  He sneered to his friend.

Ellen stepped towards him defensively.  “Hey, what he does with his pokémon is his own decision.  If he wants Totodile to evolve, let him.  Evolution is one way to success.  The stronger, the better.”

Donnie looked at her sternly.  “Evolution’s got nothing to do with strength.  I have pokémon who aren’t evolved and I bet they are stronger than any of yours.  I imagine that your whole team is fully evolved?”

The girl crossed her arms.  “For your information, I have two pokémon that haven’t evolved yet.  Like you’re one to talk, anyway.  You’re in the same boat as me.  Logan told me all about your team.  All but two fully evolved, right?”  Her voice was sharp.  Clearly she was touchy if someone got on her about her team.  Most people know not to poke a sleeping bear, but Donnie was always one to get into trouble.
