Chapter 5
Logan
Logan was, in a word, confused. This Margaret character had appeared out of nowhere and had sent both of his new friends into some sort of trance.
Ellen was completely jittery from the shock of her sudden appearance. She wasn’t making eye contact with anyone and stuttered with every sentence she tried to say. Ellen hadn’t even seemed capable of such a personality earlier.
Donnie, on the other hand, had shown this other side of him before; first, when they had been in Ecruteak City and had gone to the Kimono Dance Theater, and then when Donnie had spotted Ellen falling from the sky. Donnie had proved that he was indeed almost as vain as Josh, but in a different sense. He swore that every girl that even glanced at him was instantly falling for him. Logan found his whole system rather awkward. Now Donnie was flirting with Margaret. Surprisingly, she was taking it happily.
Ellen leaned over and spoke in a whisper. “She enjoys praise. Let’s just hope he doesn’t take it too far.” She flickered her eyes to the Ninetales that was lying on the grass next to Margaret, basking in the sunlight.
Logan took his focus back to Donnie and Margaret as she spoke. “So, Donnie, you’ve been to Unova, Sinnoh, and now you’re here in Johto?”
Donnie gave his cheesy grin that used so many times. “Well, I just like to travel, nothing special. Seeing nature and everything it has to offer.”
Margaret ran her fingers through her long auburn hair. “I would love to go to Sinnoh someday, but I thought that I would try to find what I’m looking for here first. After all, Johto does have some of the most interesting specimens for me to track.”
Logan raised an eyebrow. “Like what?”
Margaret looked at him with curiosity. “Oh, just some rather interesting pokémon that can usually only be found here. I’m trying to become an amazing trainer, as Ellen already told you.”
Donnie laughed slightly and Margaret turned to him with a questioning look. He shrugged at her. “Ellen also mentioned that you haven’t battled any gym leaders yet. Is that true?”
Margaret placed her hand on her Ninetales’ head and it blinked its red eyes open to fix a hard stare at Donnie. “Completely. Gym leaders would be at a complete disadvantage to go up against me.”
Logan glanced over to where they had released all their pokémon for some fresh air. Margaret had not released hers though. He considered Donnie’s team for a moment. They always seemed to match up with each other. Aurora was with Rain and Eevee, but Donnie’s Aipom constantly followed her. Lucario and Oshawott were meditating side by side. And Luxray and Arcanine were each sunbathing on a rock. Arcanine would occasionally glance at the Ninetales below with a look that Logan could only see as respect, though he didn’t know why.
Donnie continued to comment on Margaret’s answer. “You see, no one is going to believe how strong you claim to be if you have nothing to show for it. For example, your Ninetales doesn’t seem all that tough. I would say that it only knows basic moves judging on its attitude. More of a pokémon to look at rather than battle with.”
Ellen took in a sharp breath and slapped her hand to her forehead. Margaret gave Donnie a glaring stare. “So, you think you’re stronger than me just because of some scraps of metal that you own? I think I could beat you.”
