Chapter 4
Jared
Jared stared at the mansion from his crouched position. He glanced at his Absol in his hunting stance and growling quietly. “Easy buddy. We get in, get what we came for, and get out.” The creature looked at him from the corner of its eye. They were hidden in the shadow of the hedge that they had come through.
He looked up to a window on the second story and saw his target. A younger man, maybe twenty like himself, was pacing back and forth across the room. He appeared to be worried or possibly annoyed at something. Jared smirked; he hoped it was worry.
“Sol!” Absol barked quietly as a watchman approached their hiding spot. Jared quickly pulled his black hood over his white hair and crept back farther into the shadow. The watchman passed and Jared dashed to the wall of the building.
Absol began to search the wall until it found the window that would be their way in. Jared followed his partner. “Night Slash.” Absol’s scythe-like horn lit up in a purple light and slashed silently at the window. The glass fell from the frame cleanly and the duo jumped through. They found that they were in a dark hallway. Absol looked to his master for further instruction. Jared glanced around, and frowned. There were supposed to be guards here. “Guess we’ll just have to let them know we’re here. Why don’t you wake them up with a Psycho Cut?”
Absol’s horn began to glow again. It closed its eyes for a second then opened them, several rays emitted from its horn. The rays hit each wall and every object with loud crashes. The lights immediately turned on and Jared heard yelling from down the hall. He smiled and sprinted for the large double doors that he knew were at the end of the hall. Absol ran behind him using in the shadow of Jared’s cloak for cover.
The guards’ shouts grew louder as they sent warnings to their comrades. Jared had to admit, they sounded rather confused. They were more than likely wondering why someone would go through the trouble of sneaking in just to give themself away once inside.
Once Jared came to his destination and he threw open the doors. The man within the room jumped slightly at his entrance and stared at the white haired and violet eyed Jared before him. Before he could react, Jared ran at his target, grabbed him, and leapt through the window shattering glass as he went. Absol looked back once more before leaping after his master. As he hit the ground Jared heard shouts come from the room above. The person he held over his shoulder didn’t struggle against his grip or call out to the guards above. Jared paid the thought no heed and ran through the hedge that he had come through.
Once outside of the mansion’s grounds, the man began to laugh. Jared continued to run farther into the tangled forest beyond. Eventually, he was satisfied that they were far enough away and Jared simply dropped the man.
The man continued to laugh. When he finally took a breath, he looked at his kidnapper and smiled. “When I said make a commotion, I didn’t mean destroy the hallway. And what was with the jumping out the window stunt? I’ve never seen you pull that one before. You almost scared me.”
Jared frowned. “If you don’t like how I work, then you can break out of your house on your own.” Absol sat next to him and Jared ran his hand over its horn.
“What kind fun would that be?” the man questioned him with a lighthearted tone.
“The kind that doesn’t involve me pulling a stunt like that,” Jared retorted.
