When he was ten his father split, full of it, debt-ridden

Alex remembered the day it happened. He was in his mothers arms, when.. she went cold.

The doctors took Alex away from his mother, as he was screaming and crying. He was just a scared little boy.

Alex remembers the day that happened as well. him and his brother, James, looking for their cousin, Peter.  only to find him.. Dead.

He started retreatin' and readin' every treatise on the shelf

There would have been nothin' left to do for someone less astute
He woulda been dead or destitute without a cent of restitution
Started workin', clerkin' for his late mother's landlord
Tradin' sugar cane and rum and all the things he can't afford
Scammin' for every book he can get his hands on
Plannin' for the future see him now as he stands on

Jefferson sort of felt bad for the little boy Alex once was. But then he remembered that little boy grew up to be the gremlin that threatened to hit him with a chair.
