"Shit shit shit" I mutter, staring at the mess that was supposed to be all my homework. The parchment was scattered all across the floor and not a single sheet wasn't covered in ink. It was already nearing curfew and I was on the other side of the castle. If Filch caught me, that would mean a detention and I'm already behind on homework and no handing in homework means another detention and another detention means no time to do homework and no time to do homework means- well you get the idea.
I sit down on the floor wondering how James Potter does it when I hear someone walking up the corridor, worried that it's Filch, I try gathering up my things but before I can stuff the final sheets in my bag, they come round the corner.
I look up in worry and to my surprise it's Regulus Black. I'm about to ask what he is doing but then I remember it is the Slytherin's night for patrol.
Speaking in a voice more confident then I felt, I say
"Hello!"
Black looks at me like I have gone mad
"Hello?" He answers, not quite sure what is happening. I take a deep breath and try to think of what Marlene would do. Something that I don't often think of as what Marlene would do is generally the wrong thing to do.
"How is your evening?" I ask, trying to keep my tone casual.
"Like every other evening?" He responds
"Well that's nice. Anyway... I better be going... got some homework to do..."
"That's nice" Black says, a hint of a smile on his face.
As I walk down the corridor, I realise what i just did.
A) talked to a Slytherin, alone, at night, without being hexed.
B) got away without even losing a house point
C) made Regulus Black smile
C was the biggest achievement by far as most had never seen the boy smile in the 6 years he had been at the school. Rumor has it that Barty Crouch is the only person in the whole world to ever make Black smile, even though no one saw it occur. I know this isn't true as from Sirius' stories, he was a sweet child and often went to Sirius to laugh and play together as brother's should. That was before his parents started brainwashing the young boy.
I used to feel pity for Regulus. But that was before I meet him in person.
For some unknown reason, one of the clearest memories I have of second year was when I was walking to Potions and Black was coming out of the dungeons. I bumped into him and he swore. I had apologised and asked if he was ok, the boy glared and said "watch where your going bitch"
But clearly the boy in question had grown up, and grown out of his need to be rude and hostile towards everyone who merely looked at him.

The next morning, after having a sleepless night, redoing the homework I ruined, I walked downstairs to the great hall. To my surprise, but not to my dismay, the first person I see is the person I couldn't get out of my head.
I smiled at the boy and he (much to everyone around us amazement) smiled back.
"Did Regulus Black just smile at you?" Mary asks, as I sit down next to her.
"Maybe" I answer, trying to hide my smile.
"Your going to become a legend at school now."
"It's not I wasn't already well known."
Mary nods.
"Where are the others?" I ask, noting their absence.
"Marlene overslept, Dorcas was doing her hair, Alice was trying to do her tie and Lily is doing everyone's homework."
