(Ayda's POV)

Loki and I quietly made our way to the top of the tower using the stairs, hoping to stop the invasion.

A wave of magic came from Loki. It was a spell to check for the number of people in the building. "Besides us, the General, and Dr. Selvig on the top floor, the building is empty." He didn't drop his defensive pose or put up his weapon. I gave a simple nod in reply and continued following him upward. We climbed flight after flight.

"Why did the tower have to be this tall?" I groaned when we reached the 90th floor. "Couldn't Stark have done a shorter building?"

Loki had a small smile on his face. "Stark is an egotist. It makes him feel better about himself to have such a large building."

"Ugh, and he's one of my soulmates. At least he's cute." Joking around with Loki felt natural.

Ayda!!

A voice suddenly shouted in my ear causing me to yelp. I dropped to the floor from the shock and held a hand over my ear.

"Darling?" Loki dropped next to me and wrapped an arm around my back. "Are you alright?"

"Yeah. I guess Circe finally got back in range. She surprised me is all." Is everyone alright?

Yes, all of your soulmates are fine. Even the angry green one. I rolled my eyes at her assessment of Bruce.

I'm going to tell him you said that.

Go ahead. Anywho, the reason I shouted is that we stole a Quinjet and are on our way to you. Tony went ahead to try and stall the General but I don't think it's going to end well. The whole building shook. I grabbed a more secure hold of Loki. Scratch that. The General threw him out of the building and started the portal. We're going to be celebrating the end of the world if you can't get up there soon.

I stood carefully with Loki's hand in mine. I'll see what we can do. Circe?

Yes?

Protect them.

With my life, my child.

Loki and I had enough power for a quick teleportation to the roof. When we did, it was chaos. Aliens pored from the giant blue opening in the sky, flying down and attacking civilians. I watched as people were cut down in the streets. Buildings burned. I could see Tony in his suit, flying around and drawing Chitori away from the civilians.

"Look away." Loki turned my head away from watching the streets. "Watching will only make you heartbroken. Right now, we need to focus. Or else more will lose their life."

"It's sad either way." I looked toward the strange mechanical device a few paces away. Dr. Selvig was on the ground looking up at Tasha who stood above him. My guess is he got some cognitive recalibration.

As Loki and I ran up we hear Nat talking, "It's not your fault. You didn't know what you were doing."

Selvig looked up at her. "Well, actually I think I did. I built in a safety to cut the power source."

Nat's eyes widened, "Loki's scepter."

"It might be able to close the portal." Selvig looks down. He sees a golden shimmer on the balcony below. "And I'm looking right at it."

I run up behind Nat and wrap her in a hug. "Nat!" I hold her close her a moment. "I was so worried."

Nat's arms hesitantly come around me as well. "No need to worry, крошка. I'm a professional."

I lean away from her with a questioning look, "Poppet? Really"

Nat smiled, "I'll try to come up with something better next time."

The sound of a throat clearing behind me made me turn. "While this is all quite cute, we need to stop that," Loki pointed at the tear in space above us. "Or else we're all going to die."

"Right." Nat reached into a pocket and held out a tiny earpiece to both Loki and me. "Put these on, then the whole team can hear you." I slipped the small device in. Immediately I could hear Cap giving out orders and Tony making witty jokes.

"What's the plan guys?" I call into the earpiece. Cap and Tony shouted over each other, trying to see if I was okay. "I'm fine guys. We figured out how to close the portal."

"Do it!" Cap replies

"No, wait!" Tony shouts after. He sounds concerned, scared almost.

"Tony, what's wrong?" I ask and am immediately ignored.

Steve tries, "Stark, these things are still coming!"

From inside his suit I can hear Tony. "I got a nuke coming in, it's gonna blow in less than a minute. And I know just where to put it." My eyes widen. Disregarding Tasha's and Loki's screams, I jump off the side of the tower and pull my broom from its pocket dimension. I follow Tony outside the city and toward the bomb.

"What are you doing here?" He shouts at me.

"Helping." I hold one hand out and begin to guide the missile. "Little help." Tony flies underneath it and helps by turning it closer to the opening. Together we push it away from the people.

"You guys, that's a one-way trip." Steve's voice is quiet, barely above a whisper.

"I know." A tear falls down my cheek. "I'm sorry, Tony." His head turns toward me. I can't see his face but I can tell he is confused. With a whisper, I shut down his suit with magic and send him back toward the ground. "I'm sorry guys." With the last of my energy, I push the missile into the portal.

Weightless in space, I watch as it continues toward the main Chitori ship. There were so many out here, waiting until they were needed. It was terrifying. I felt my body begin to fall as an explosion rocked the air around me. Everything rushed past me as I fell from the sky and my vision went black.
