PART 16

Chapter 26

(Cameron)

I pulled up to the Rec. Center, reciting the words over and over again in my head that I wanted to say to Alexa. I walked straight into the party room, not meeting any of the odd stares that were being directed my way. I guess news travels fast everywhere.

I spotted Alexa right away, and saw that she was dancing with Jesse. I was glad she was occupied, because it gave me time to think of a plan. I felt a twinge of jealousy, but brushed it off. I needed to think of something that would make Alexa take me back. Something that would make it impossible for her to refuse.

Suddenly, my eyes landed on the perfect solution, and my plan started taking shape. I pulled out my phone and texted Jesse.

Once that was done, I still had one more thing to do. I made a quick phone call, then slid my phone back into my pocket. Satisfied with my plan so far, I walked over to the kid who was in charge of the lights.

As we danced, I fell deeper and deeper into my thoughts. The music had made me feel free at first, but as I started to relax for the first time in a while, my mind got bored and decided to wander.

Jesse must have noticed that I was deep in thought as we danced, since he slowed down a little and looked down at me.

“Is everything all right?” He asked, genuine concern in his voice.

I decided to only be partially honest. “I was just thinking about Cameron.”

“He’s really a great guy, you know. He didn’t mean to get you pulled into his messed up life.”

“I know……. I just……….. I don’t know.”

Jesse chuckled at my contradiction, but I think he understood what I meant.

“I just really thought you two had something special. You clicked the moment you laid eyes on each other- that much was obvious. And you seemed to have some kind of connection through the loss of your parents. It’s almost like it was fate.”

“I don’t believe in fate.” I replied simply. “And besides, Cameron’s parents are alive.”

“But he didn’t know that until a few days ago. For most of his life, he believed his parents were dead, and they might as well have been, since they just up and left him.”

“I guess you’re right. I’ve been reconsidering my decision ever since the moment I broke up with him, but I can’t convince myself that it was the wrong thing to do. He’s leaving in less than two months anyway- it was probably better to end it now than to wait until things got even more serious.”

“Who said it would have to end when he leaves?”

“He lives over fifty miles away, and we both have a year left in school. We would only get to see each other over holiday breaks, and maybe on some weekends.”

Jesse’s phone buzzed. “Sorry. One second.” He read his new text quickly. Then he put his phone back in his pocket, and picked up the conversation right where we had left off. “This is just my opinion, but I think that if you two really care about each other- and it’s obvious that you do- then distance won’t matter.”

“I know that you’re right, but like I said, I don’t think I made a bad decision, but now that I think about it, we should have sat down and talked about it. I was a little harsh.”

“A little?”

“Okay, a lot.”

“Knowing Cameron, he’s probably torn down the entire camp by now. It’s in his eyes, Lex. He loves you.”
