Steve does a double take he stares at the phone before placing it back to his ear.
Steve
Hey.. Hey. How's it going? Is everything alright?
Nancy
Yeah... Yeah. Everything's fine. Why?
Steve
Well, I just didn't think there would be any other reason for you to be calling me..
Nancy is a little hurt.
Steve
I mean. What I meant was since it's 2 in the morning..
Nancy
Is it a crime for me to call you because I might actually want to talk to you?
Nancy lets out a small laugh.
Steve
I guess not.. Just you've never done it before so..
They both sit motionless. Waiting for one another to start a conversation..
Nancy
So how have you been? What have you been up to?
Steve
Oh you know. Nothing new for me. Still at the video store.. just trying to get by right now..
Nancy
Things are tough for everyone.
Steve
Yeah. I was thinking about quitting but weren't any other openings.. and if there were they wouldn't want to hire me.
Nancy
Steve any place would be lucky to have you.
Steve is thrown by that comment.
Steve
Yeah. a guy who basically flunked high school, couldn't get into college, worked at an Ice cream parlor and now works at a video store..
Nancy thinks for a moment..
Nancy
They don't see what I see Steve, what we all see.
Steve is still baffled.. this is a different Nancy?
Steve
Thanks.. Anyways enough about me.. How about you? When do you head out for Emerson?
Nancy

I feel like it's actually happening all so fast. Seems like just yesterday we were all in high school. You, me, Jonathan, Barb..
Steve winces just hearing Barb's name.. he knows he didn't handle it right.. wishes he could fix it.
Steve

Nancy

Another silence between the two. Nancy shoots.
Nancy
You know, It's silly but.. My mom and dad are having sort of a going away party for me Wednesday night.. sorta like a send off. A chance for me to say goodbye to everyone.
