“How did I end up here?” I demand the answers, ignoring the fact that the man I dream of and whom I want so much is standing in front of me and is real despite all. So many questions I wished to ask.
His eyes searched mine trying to calm me. Even though he looked scary, there was something inside him that made me calm a bit. I just wanted answers.
“Well, as Lucienne said, this is Dreaming, a realm of dreams and nightmares and…" He tucked hair behind my eyes, touching my skin gently. I felt goosebumps all over my skin.
"I'm the king of dreams and nightmares. Since you started having nightmares I couldn't bear to watch you suffer night by night.” Dream said, almost whispering into my ear.
“Something is interesting about you. You're not like the others. Deep down inside you, there is something strong, and powerful that I still can't understand.”
Even though we stood in a dark place, at least it looked like it, my skin was burning with a desire to know something more about him and this place. I would be a fool if I didn't admit to myself that I'm truly scared. I always believed in impossible things, but this was beyond everything I’ve managed. Strange figures were walking around, such as a talking raven or even a scarecrow. They all served their master, a king of dreams, Morpheus.
“But why me? It’s not enough that my life is complicated and to fall for a creature like you.” I couldn't control myself, I couldn’t stop mumbling and talking nonsense.
“I haven't been in love for a very long time. After being captured for over a century, alone, I realized something. I need even a mortal to be by my side.” He cupped my cheeks, almost kissing me. I could feel his breath on my skin. He was so real and this wasn't a fruit of my imagination.
Everything he said sounded partly insane, that I, an ordinary girl, caught the attention of the King of Dreams. Maybe my mother was right to dream, maybe I was destined for the bigger thing I've imagined. I felt like my head was going to burst.
The next thing I remembered was laying on the familiar bend. Before I left a loud sigh, Morpheus caressed my hair, “How do you feel, darling?”
His eyes searching mine, I could feel something warm inside me, as he slowly melted my heart.
“Still a bit dizzy.” I smiled, slowly placing my hand on his desperate to touch his soft skin. He kissed my forehead first but soon as he looked me in the eyes he kissed me like no one ever. He brushed his fingers across my shoulders, letting the straps of my sleeping gown fall. Every nerve ending in my body tingled with excitement. He touched my body so gently and passionately. Running his hands down my curvaceous body, he looked deep into my eyes, that I forget about being dizzy or feeling overwhelmed. Slowly, we took turns removing each other’s clothing, until all that separated us was my warm breath blowing gently on his chest and pale skin. He moved kisses from my throat, down to my collar, then kissed my breasts with excitement, like he did something similar before. I held my breath and waited for the pain as he entered me but luckily there was none, just an overwhelming feeling of pleasure. It was the bonding of two bodies in smooth rhythmic motion, twisting and turning, exploring each other most passionately. I experienced the wildest making love ever, like in my dreams. Of course, like in my dreams, he knew exactly what would turn me on. Suddenly it all stopped as it lasted a second.
I lay on his bare chest, covered with black satin sheets only to cover his crotch and my slit as my breasts were free. Morpheus caressed my body while I was melting in his arms.
He broke the silence between us, despite the fact I enjoyed the silence for once.
“Sweetheart, there…” he pointed to a stunning wardrobe in the corner, “you have clothes…” although before he continued to talk, I had a lot of questions.
“Morpheus, hmmm, what will happen to my real life, hmmm, you know what I mean?” I looked worried at him.
“I haven't thought about it, I hoped you'd like it here.” He stood up quickly off the bed, standing proudly naked.
“Since you're here, you make me feel like I am whole again.” Dream said through his teeth, quietly.
“But Morpheus, I have to think…” I quietly said to him but as I gathered my thoughts he already left the room most dramatically. I couldn't believe that he would not be able to understand. My real life lately wasn't some fairy tale but I would explain to anyone that I'm in the Kingdom of Dreaming, sharing a bed with the King of Dreams and Nightmares because we fall in love in some mysterious way. Anyway, I opened the heavy door and started looking for Lucienne. All I dreamed of was to be at home.
Raven flew over my head mumbling something.
“You must be Elizabeth,” Raven said.
I was startled, honestly, I was terrified of a talking creature.
“Ummmm, yes, indeed I'm Elizabeth," I said back to the bird, sounding like I'm losing my mind.
”I'm Matthew, pleased to meet you." A bird made a bow.
“Ummmm, where can I find Lucienne?” I asked.
“Follow me, please.” The bird flew away, and I began to follow it step by step.
We entered one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to, the old library where I spotted Lucienne holding a book and reading something, visibly annoyed when I walked in. I could sense that she wasn't fond of me. My presence apparently disturbed “harmony” in the kingdom. She was my only hope to stop this madness or just to help me leave this place without asking the Lord.
“I’m sorry for disturbing you, but I need your help.” She closed the book so that echoes spread throughout the library.
“Why would I betray my master?” Lucienne looked at me through the glasses.
I bit my lip, restraining myself from sobbing, but the only thing I longed for was not to be here anymore. As much as my heart wanted my sanity was telling me otherwise.
I left the library without saying anything and started looking for Morpheus.
Halls seemed longer and wider while I was walking down, and there he was reading on the stairway all in black being magnificent.
Morpheus stood up. He walked towards me gradually.
“You humans are weird, first you want to run away from your nightmares and I gave you all you wanted and somehow this isn't enough for you.” A deep mellow voice ran through the palace.
It's not that I didn't want it, but people I know will think the worst. Perhaps I killed myself in misery or else. I just needed time to think about everything even though my heart was breaking from thinking that Morpheus might not be my saviour in the darkest nightmares anymore.
I stepped closer to him but in one move of his hand, I was in my bed alone.
