Chapter 2-

I awoke to the sounds of a girl's scream. I leapt up, and stared wide-eyed in front of me. A young girl, no older than ten, was trapped in the glass square, with a deformed, failed human-lynx combination trying to hunt her down. It's paw-feet had more than ten toes, and it's deformed face looked like something from nightmares. I threw myself against the bars, trying to break them. She couldn't die. I had to help her. Her white wings unfurled from the slits in her back, matching with her blonde hair. She flapped desperately, but with no result. The black haired boy in the cell next to me had his hands clenched around the bars, his teeth bared. He shook the solid cell bars, to no avail. The boy in the cell next to him kneeled by the bars, his hands gripping them. Tears ran down his face, tears of fear. I could smell his fear, and the girls. They mixed, to give the atmosphere a horrid appearance. The boy seemed to sense it to, becuase he shook at the bars harder, jiggling the gate slightly. I slammed up against them, doing nothing but bruising my shoulder. Finally, I screeched at the labmen. "Let her go, you bastards!!" I yelled, and time seemed to stop. For a millisecond, the glass door opened, along with the girls cell, and she ran to it's safety. The creature stumbled after her, but stopped when a dart shot from nowhere, killing it instantly with a hit to the neck. My door then opened, and out came the genetically altered lizard-freaks, the only other successful mutants besides me and apparently these kids. I rushed one, grabbing his arm, twisting it, and pulling it behind his back until I heard the satisfying pop and scream. The next one sprang at me, and I quickly took to the air and pummeled his head with my feet. He fell, unconscious instead of broken beyond repair, like old fractured arm on the floor next to him. That one kept howling, so I landed, right on his head with a stomp. The next darted at me, and I sidestepped, watching it hurtle itself into a labman, causing both to become unconscious. What an idiot. I rushed to him, and, without thinking, knew what I was to do.

I reached the unconscious man, and took a tranquilizer needle from his pocket, and stabbing him in the neck with it. I then proceeded to snatch the laminate card key from around his neck, which opened our block of cells. Quickly, I rushed back to the children. First, the girl's cell. Then, the young boy's. And finally, the last one, the older boy. He nodded to me, and I grabbed the girl's arm, the boy grabbing the younger boy's arm. They followed me down the hallways, to the only exit door. By that time, the red emergency alarm was flashing. I kicked open the door, and ran out into the outside world. So...bright. The setting sun shone across the landscape, bathing it in red light. I grabbed the girl by the arm, and smiled to her. "Watch." I said, not sure if she could understand me. She nodded, and I unfurled my wings, and jumped into the air, flapping them. She did the same, running to jump first, but she made it. And she flew like a natural.

The older boy had made it into the sky, his jet black wings flapping against the slight wind. The second boy ran and jumped, his caramel brown wings already unfolded and open. He jumped, and flew over to us. We shared brief nods, and the girl slipped her pale hand into mine. We flew toward the trees, until shots rang out below us, and bullets shot past us in the sky.
