Miss Peregrine sat in a chair, looking pale, and now not caring whether the grime was spread, gestured to Jake for him to sit as well.

"I suppose you shouldn't tell us the rest." Miss Peregrine said slowly.

"Why not?"

"Miss Perine, if anyone were to know exactly what would happen, don't you think they might want to keep some bad thing from happening?"

My mind flashed to the scenes of gore and death that the story had held. Then realization dawned on me.

"You're saying I could mess with the plot." I said. "That I could make it worse."

Miss Peregrine nodded, looking weary and sad. "Yes. I'm sure some unpleasant things happen, but if we were to mess up the future while trying to save a few lives, we could end up causing the destruction of the world. Messing with the future is dangerous business, especially when one has knows so many details about what will happen."

"Well then, what's the use?" I said angrily. "I know what's going to happen! Do YOU know what's going to happen, how much you're going to suffer?"

"No, but-" Miss Peregrine tried to interrupt, to calm me down, but I was too upset.

"Your own bloody brother's gonna practically destroy everyone!"

"Miss Perine! That's enough!" exclaimed Miss Peregrine, placing her hands on my shoulders and lowering me back down into the seat I had leapt out of.

"I'm sorry," I said, much quieter. "I guess I've learned to care about the people I read about a lot. I click with them."

"I appreciate the sediment," the headmistress said curtly back to me. "But I'll give you a moment to collect your thoughts and calm down. I would like to take a walk with Mr. Portman while you do so. Is that satisfactory?"

I nodded and she swiftly set out of the room, Jake towing behind.
