For a moment the wight was still, then he started to writhe and scream. Blood laced from a hole in his neck and spilled onto the floor. I was glad we weren't staying to clean it up.
For a few seconds, this lasted, until the wight just lay, motionless. Enoch went up and checked to see if he was really dead, being the one who was most used to the dead and bloody.
Jake had killed the wight, alright. Shot him right in the neck, just like in the book.
"I killed him," Jake said, disbelieving. "I've killed my first wight." He repeated it like he was still deciding whether to be proud, or sick.
"Don't feel guilty." I said.
"He deserved it." Miss Peregrine finished.
We all stood there staring at the body of the wight, then Miss Peregrine snapped to her senses and started to order everyone to get their things and follow her out of the house.
I grabbed my backpack and Jake grabbed his. Everyone else had suitcases, or some sort of small pack. Horace was looking a bit gloomy (even more gloomy than everyone else), so I went over to him.
"What's wrong?" I asked him, standing by his side as he looked back at the house.
"All those good articles of clothing in my closet, put to waste." He sighed and shook his head and I giggled. He smiled.
"By the way," I said. "It was genius, what you did back there." My heart was beating so abnormally, I thought I wouldn't be able to keep my voice even.
"Thank you." Horace said back. I could have sworn his voice had a slight falter to it too.
We stood there for a moment. Then Horace straightened his dressy suit-coat and pulled the flower out of it's slit. He stared at it for a moment, then hastily thrust it out toward me.
"For you." He said.
"... Thank you." I took it and we both blushed and he hurried away toward the rest of the group that was forming out on the lawn.
I realized I was smiling one of those dopey grins and looked at the flower. It was simple, but sweet, with blue petals and crusty pollen that sat in the middle.
Blue, like the color of his eyes.
