"Hello? Mar? Are you there?" I answer my cell half asleep due to the fact that Mariah was calling me at two in the morning.
"Nia... I.. Help me!" Se said sobbing. "Pinche! Mar?! Are you okay? Where are you?" I said jumping up from my bed. "I.. I.. I-I'm with Hiro. He just came and got me from Ronny's." her voice sounded weak and she was still crying.
"Okay mammas I'll be right there. I'm coming okay? I'm going to get Noe and we will be at Hiro's in five minutes." Picking up my jeans I hastily pulled off my basketball shorts an pulled on my Levi's. "O...O-Okay, I...I I'll be... Be here w-with H-Hiro." She hung up and I pulled on my Jordan's as quickly as possible. Running out of my room I grabbed my Andrew Hill sweatshirt and pulled it over my head.
"Noe!? Get up." I said walking into my twin brothers room turning on the bedside light. "What the hell Nia? Que te pasa? Porque estas gritando?! Todo vía estoy en la mismo cuarto de ti!" (Whats up with you? Why are you yelling?! Im in the same room as you?!)
My brother speaks in Spanish when he's pissed off and it's safe to say he's quite pissed. "Something happened to Mariah. Ella me llamo llorando saying that Hiro went and picked her up. But she didn't say from where and she sounds horrible. Noe I think that Hijo de puta hit her again."
Jumping up as quickly as I did Noe pulled on sweats over his boxers, put on his Nikes and a t-shirt as he ushered me out of his room.
"Adonde vas ustedes?" My mom said stopping us in our tracks. "Mammie alguien le pego a Mariah. No lo se que esta pasando pero yo necesito que ir a mirar mi mejor amiga. Ella se necesita mi ayuda mami." (Mom someone hit Mariah. I don't know whats going on but I need to go see my best friend. She needs my help momma)
My mom walked towards me and hugged me hard.
"Okay, go Mijita (little girl) make sure that she's okay. But as soon as you get to that house you stay inside. You know for a fact that is he hit her if shes calling so late crying and if she left him, he will go looking for her." My mother kissed my forehead and gave Noe a Hug before hurrying us out and locking the door.
"Noe? Do you think he's looking for her? I mean do you think that he will try to get her back? He's hurt her so much and she just keeps going back Noe. She's my best friend and I want to make sure she's safe. She's like a sister to me."
My brother pulled up to a stop light and hugged me. "Mira (look) everything will be okay. Why don't you ask her to move in with us. It's our senior year and if she's with us we can at least look out for her. Yea? We will make sure he doesn't hurt her anymore Nia I promise hermanita.(little sister)"
Smiling I looked back at the road as Noe started driving again.

Ten minutes later we pull in to Hiro's driveway getting out of my brother Matte black Chevy Nova we make our way up the steps to the house. I see that most of my brothers friends have gathered either on the porch or in the living room.
I should probably say that Hiro is Mariah's older brother he's 22 and lives in evergreen which is still in San Jose but the more influential part. Hiro works for NASA he's an astrophysicist, the youngest one there too. He's pretty much a genius. Hiro takes care of his sister as best he can but seeing that he does work from 5-9 five days a week it's hard. Being from our barrio we have seen a lot Hiro tried to get his parents and baby sister out of there but they refused to leave.
