NICO'S POV:
I shuffled to the back of the store, counting the remaining money we had from camp. We had quite a bit, but I had no clue how long it would need to last. I filled my arms with canned foods and other nonperishables. I walked back to the front and dropped the groceries onto the counter. The older woman stared at me for a moment too long, making me shift on my feet, before slowly turning to the food and began beeping them into the system. Once it was all bagged up I paid and turned to leave.
"Do you think I'm just going to let a son of Hades go?" Her voice was raspy.
I felt my whole body stiffen with fear and anticipation, and I turned back to face her. " what did you say?"
"You heard me, child of the underworld."
I grabbed at my ring, readying myself. The woman let the mist drop from her as she clambered over the counter, her legs turning into the bottom half of a serpent. Shit.
ANNABETH'S POV:
a few hours later
I flopped down by our newly made fire, next to Will. He seemed to have a shadow shading his face, an expression I have become very familiar with over the years.
"Are you worried about him?"
His face shot up, and his eyes grew wide. " What? Why would I be worried? It's Nico, I'm sure he'll be fine. I mean I guess."
I grinned "I know you like him. You don't need to hide it from me, Will"
" I don't..." He hung his head and sighed. " Ya... ya, I think I might."
"Hey it's okay, I won't judge either of you."
"I- I'm not sure if he even likes me back or not." His cheeks brightened with a deep blush.
"Oh he does, I just know it!" I giggled and fainted a swoon, and Will laughed.
The door burst open, a cold wind slapped our faces, and an extensive shadow barged in. I tensed, but then I recognized the silky black fur.
"Blackjack...!" Will's sentence was cut off when a hunched figure dropped from Blacjack's back. The figure staggered into the light of the fire, and we gasped as Nico dropped some red splattered bags onto the ground before falling forward. He would have face-planted if Will hadn't rushed forward, and caught him.
