I walk into On the Border and see Vic in the corner. I walk over and he gasps. I smile and am instantly attacked in a hug, I laugh and I can't help but hug him back. "I missed you so much Uncle Vic."
"I missed you too, Shorty" he says making me laugh, he's still taller than me. Which I still don't understand considering I'm Mike's kid.
"How's Gram and Gramps?" I ask. I haven't seen them since the boys got back from tour.
"Great, they miss you. They try to hide it for your dad but it's hard," Vic says and I sigh.
"Mike isn't my dad, he wasn't there for me my whole life." I say.
"I didn't say he was a good dad, I just said he was your dad," Vic says in response.
"You were more of a dad than he was," I say. He looks away, knowing it's true.
"He misses you, he carries a picture of you around everywhere." Vic says. I smile a little, knowing I do the same. The last picture we took together was at my tenth birthday party, it was the first time he'd been sober for weeks. I turn on my phone and show Vic my lock screen and he smiles, "Why don't you just talk to him?"
"Because I've been hurt enough the past five years, I can't let it happen anymore." I say quietly. I tug on my sleeves subconsciously, of all things my uncle notices, he notices that. He grabs my arm, making me hiss in pain. He lifts my sleeve and he can't help but let the gasp out.
"Oh god Ronnie, what are you doing?" He says to the red lines on my arm, I yank it back.
"Don't worry your brother isn't the only cause, Dr. Handsy is responsible too. Although if Mike never left, I would've never gone there and got pregnant at thirteen." I say getting up and walking out of the restaurant. Luckily my house was only two blocks away. I walk in and see my favorite sight when I'm upset. My smiling two year old son.
"Mama!" He screeches and I laugh. I see my mom smile at his reaction. You'd think since he's a spitting image of his father, that I would hate him, but it makes me love him even more. I'm close to Jack's family, I try to keep them very involved in Zeke's life. Jack calls once a week, I let him talk to Zeke, but only for Zeke.
"Did he call?" I ask my mom as I pick up Zeke.
"Yeah, you should've seen Zee, he was laughing. But he said he had to talk to you personally about something?" She said.
"Did he say he'd call back?" Just then the phone started ringing. I looked at the I.D., it was him. "Hi Jack," I say breathlessly.
"Hey Ron, how are ya?"
"Good, just trying to keep up with everything," I say, forcing myself not to have disgust in my voice.
"How's Zeke, he sounded really happy earlier," he says.
"Good, I got the present for him you wanted."
"Did he like it?" Jack says.
"Yeah, he sleeps with it every night." I say.
"Look, as much as I could talk about Zeke for hours, I need to talk to you. I wanted you to hear it from me, and not the attorney," he says. "I'm being released in two weeks Ron.......can I see Zeke. In person, I know you don't trust me alone with him, you can supervise. We can meet at the park or something?"
"S-S-Sure Jack," I stutter.
"Oh god thank you so much Ron, I owe you so much,"
"You owe me for more than just this, but its fine...." I say coldly.
"I truly am sorry, you know that right?" He says, I can tell by his voice that he means it.
"Sure, listen I've had a rough day and kind of just wanna get to bed okay?"
"Okay Ron, talk to you next week."
"Bye Jack." I say. I walk downstairs and see Zeke passed out on the couch. I smile and turn off the T.V. I walk in the kitchen and see Mom. "He's getting out Mom," I sob and run into her arms.
"What? How? He was sentenced to ten years," she says.
"I didn't ask why but.....he wants to see Zeke." I say.
"Of course he does, it's not like he hasn't put you through enough," she says, not able to hide the hatred in his voice.
"We're meeting at the park, I couldn't say no Mom. All I could think about was Zeke." I sob.
"It's okay baby," she says, "It'll all be okay." But I had a feeling, something, something bad was about to happen.
