"Alright, kids. Get in your seats. Someone here needs to introduce herself to you."
A stern-looking auburn-haired woman walked quickly into the room. She glared at everyone in the room, and Sora gave a squeak and ran to a desk in the back row as the woman's furious gaze landed on her.
"New kid! Introduce yourself."
Maya took a shaky breath, stood up, and said, "I'm... Maya Griffith. I'm in fifth grade, and... I just moved to this area of town a few days ago, so that's... that's why I haven't been here."
The woman nodded stiffly. "Is there any reason you're wearing that headset, or are you going to put it away now?"
Maya opened her mouth to reply, but the look on her new teacher's face, along with her thoughts, seemed to say that she'd best not say anything if she didn't want to get in trouble. She nodded, paused her music, and slowly took off her headset. To her surprise, the stern woman actually seemed to almost smile at that.
"Thank you. If only your classmates followed directions half as well," she glared around the room at the Jade Winglet, causing Sora to emit another squeak.
"Maya, you can sit by Timothy. He's the one in the third row."
"Okay," Maya nearly whispered, resisting the urge to shake her head to clear it. She walked past Katie and the boy she'd seen throwing paper airplanes. He was trying to be subtle about massaging the area of his chest right above his heart. He made a strange face.
Fear? Maya caught from his mind. That makes sense; Ms. Krystal is pretty scary. But even Sora didn't feel that much of it...
Oh, he's an Empath, Maya thought. She had a sudden hunch that if anyone was going to figure her out without her having told them, it was him. I have to be careful.
She sat down next to Timothy, who, she realized, had been the boy trying to stop the fight. He had darkish green hair that stuck up in spikes and a Creeper of the Lost Kitties patch on his left cheek, but other than that he looked fairly average.
But of course, two seconds later, a blinding pain shot through Maya and she was suddenly curling into a ball in her chair, knowing only that she couldn't let anyone see her eyes glowing the way her mother said they did whenever she had these visions.
Timothy and an extravagantly made-up girl with an animus mark (check the pics) on her cheek were facing off on a beach. The girl was holding a knife.
"Give it up, Tim! I have the power, and you can't stop me!"
"I can't let you do this, Lina."
"And I have no choice but to do it."
Timothy then ripped off his cheek patch and revealed an animus mark of his own.
"Then I have no choice but to stop you."
He then raised the knife from Lina's hand, turning it so it faced her.
And then Maya was pulled back to reality.
So anyway... Not gonna let you guys forget that Whiteout's dead-
