"Hi there, Maggie," Dr. Kate smiled. "I missed you. Are you feeling better?"
Maggie held tight to Papa's hand. But she nodded.
"Mom and Dad say you're not talking much these days, huh? Mom says the monsters got your voice?"
Maggie nodded hesitantly.
"Want to come play some more? We can draw if you want."
Maggie looked at her papa and mama. They smiled and encouraged her to go ahead.
"We'll be right here when you're finished hanging out with Dr. Kate, okay?"
Maggie nodded.
"Have they behaved well enough for coffee?" Dr. Kate asked. Maggie nodded enthusiastically. Dr. Kate smiled.
Maggie followed Dr. Kate into the playroom.
"Do you want to draw again?" Dr. Kate asked. Maggie nodded. They went over to the colouring table and Maggie chose a piece of white paper.
"Maggie," Dr. Kate said. "Do you remember what happened when you were sick?"
Maggie looked at Dr. Kate, then looked away and shook her head. Dr. Kate made a note in her book.
Maggie started drawing. She took out a black crayon and drew a girl lying on the ground, and then she drew a circle around her and coloured the rest of the paper black. Then she drew the rope things that happened when she got 'sick'.
"Can you tell me what that's a picture of? Who is the little girl?"
Maggie pointed at herself.
"And you're in a circle? Where is this circle?"
Maggie pulled out another paper and wrote: 'skaree room'.
"Oh. Are you standing up in the circle?"
Maggie shook her head.
"You're lying down?" Maggie nodded.
"What are these?" Dr. Kate asked, pointing at the rope things that moved.
"Rope tings that move," Maggie wrote.
"They move? How?"
Maggie shrugged.
"I mean, are they fast or slow? Are they like snakes?"
Maggie nodded.
"I see. One is around your neck."
Maggie nodded.
"That must have been scary," Dr. Kate said. Maggie nodded.
"Then i got sik," Maggie wrote.
"Oh. This was a dream you had before you got sick?"
Maggie frowned.
"It feeled lik not a dreem," Maggie wrote.
"I bet it felt very real."
Maggie nodded.
"Were the monsters there when you were sick?"
Maggie thought and then nodded.
"Did they talk to you?"
Maggie nodded.
"Do you remember what they said?"
Maggie looked down at her lap. She didn't like thinking about the monsters.
"Meen tings," Maggie wrote.
"I know they said hurtful things, but what did they say?"
"I stoopid. Mama and papa dont luv me."
