The house was pretty good, decorations-wise. A strobe light flashed nonstop. Dry-ice smoke drifted across the floor. Tinfoil coated the walls, reflecting the pulsing light. There were webs and skulls and candelabras. A knight in full armor came toward us raising a huge sword. The strobe made his movements jerky. A couple girls screamed. The knight lowered his sword. He moved around, mostly side to side. But he no longer looked menacing, because he failed to go through with his attack. Realizing that, he started doing robot dance moves. Me and a few others started laughing.
"Why did everyone build this up so much," Cole said frowning.
"What we're you expecting?" Dalton asked.
Cole shrugged, and replied. "Rabid wolves fighting to the death."
"It's not too bad," Jenna said
"Too much hype," Cole said. "My expectations were through the roof." Turning to me and Jenna, he said. "Are you guys terrified?"
"Not really," Jenna said. "I don't see any body parts."
"They did a good job, though." I said.
The knight went back to his hiding place, and one guy started handing out candy, minis, but we got two or three each.
Then an older kid with messy hair walked into the hall. He was skinny, probably college age. He wore jeans and a bright orange shirt that said 'BOO' in bold black letters, otherwise he had no costume.
"Was this scary enough?" He asked nonchalantly.
A couple girls said yes. Most of us were silent. I felt like it would be rude to tell the truth.
The boo guy folded his arms across his chest. "Some if you don't look very frightened," he said. "Anybody want to see the the real scary part?"
He acted serious, but it could have been a setup for some corny joke.
"Sure." Cole volunteered. Me, Jenna, and a few other kids chimed in as well.
The guy stared at us like he thought we would start screaming and running. "All right," he said. "If you say so. Fair warning: if any of this other stuff was freaky at all, don't come."
Two girls backed away and shook there heads. One of them buried her head against a boys chest, and the boy left with them,
"Check out Stu," Dalton said. "He thinks he's Dr. love."
"Why would those girls have come in the first place if they didn't want to get freaked out." I said. Cole shrugged.
The remaining seven followed the boo guy, he led them through the kitchen and to a white door with a brass knob. "It's down in the basement," he said. "I won't be coming. Are you sure you want to go? It's really messed up." He asked us.
Blake opened the door and led the way down. I shared a glance with Jenna. They had come this far, right? No going back now. No one else chickened out either. So me and Dalton followed Cole and Jenna down the stairs.
