“We make up horrors to help us cope with the real ones.”
- Stephen King
Darkness. That was pretty much what I was entirely consumed by as I walked my way through the desolate, late night streets. The lack of light was due to the area around my house. It was located on the outskirts of the city, and of course this resulted in less houses and lamp-posts being around to light the streets during the late hours of the night. While there was some light to guide me, it wasn't as much as I would like, considering I jumped at every freaking movement!
I mean, strolling toward a local convenient store in the middle of the night would most likely freak anybody out, no matter who you are! Normally in this situation, I would have gone straight home and get comfy in my warm, blue, wool-quilted double bed, but tonight i just had a strong craving for some junk. On top of that, I doubt I could even manage to fall asleep after what just happened just a few hours ago.
After walking for several minutes and hearing the occasional, eery sound protruding from my surroundings, I finally arrived arrived at this god, forsaken 'Centra'. Why the hell couldn't they put a shop just around the train station instead of having it all the way out here, where it'll take even longer for me to make it home! God damn Irish Government!
The moment I stepped through the wide, automatic doors, I was met by a blast of of beautiful heat and, somewhat annoying, fluorescent lighting. The quaint little shop was almost completely sprawled with a wide variety of goods ranging from brooms and sponges to chicken and sweets. Yum, chicken and sponges... I mean chicken and sweets. Duh, who in their right minds would even think about eating a sponge!? Nope not me!
The miniature looking cashier looked as if she was about to pass out any minute. She appeared to be in her late fifties, wearing a green, cotton shirt with the 'Centra' logo on the left side of her chest and a pair of slighty worn pair of blue jeans. I could feel the boredom and desperation to leave pretty much rolling of her. It's times like this I'm almost glad that I don't have to work like this, doing almost nothing challenging and productive all day. Rememer I'm using the term 'almost' very loosely!
Taking a quick look around the shop, I look around to see if anyone else was strolling around the little shop. The only other resemblance to life, appeared to be a man, standing by the corner of the shop, looking around at the 'body care/cleaning' section and seemed to be looking at what appeared to be... Condoms?! Well I guess someone thinks he's getting lucky tonight. Well personally, I don't think many people in their right minds would ever go for him, unless he was married already then, I feel sorry for the poor woman!
He appeared to be around forty years of age, I'm guessing, but had wrinkles the size of New York! He had a massive 'bear-belly' that was slighty protruding out of his white - what I think to be- curry stained, button-up top with a heavily wrinkled pair of blue chinos. Now I don't know much about fashion, but I'm pretty sure that those things are supposed to go together on heavy men. *Sigh* Old people and trying to dress like younger people, but only end up messing up miserably. What has the world come to?
After being damaged for life by the man's appearance, I decide to move along with what I had planned on doing. I walk over to the shelf where all the bags of sweets were neatly placed on the hooks. I 'happily' spend the next few minutes looking at all the bags that are before me. I decide on a bag of 'Counters' only. I can only decide on one, sadly, because I just came to the realisation that I don't have money on me, other than the two euro's and eighty -three cent that were in my pocket leftover from lunch. I walk over to the counter and lazily pick up a pack of 'Extra Spearmint'. I really want the '5' gum, but I guess it'll have to do.
I walk over to the counter with the little amount of goods that I had. It seemed that at this moment, that the cashier seemed to notice my presence. How in the hell could somebody not know I was here?! I don't even care if you were in your sleepy, dozing state!
"Oh! hello there. Sorry I didn' hear you coming in. How are you doing this early morning?"
"well I'm doing okay. I'm just getting a little something on my way back from work" I tell her as I hand her the sweets.
"well lucky you. You may be getting off work only now, but you don't have to keep working doing nothing but sitting around in the middle of the night. And also, that will be €2.44, please." She confesses my thoughts on her work as she tells me my total.
"here you go. I hope that it won't be too horrible from here on" I inform her, trying to give her some form of comfort from her misery.
"Thank you. I hope you have a nice n-" she is about to finish, when we were met by a deep, muffled scream, that seemed to be coming from outside. I quickly make my way outside to see the cause of the scream.
I yell over to the cashier telling her to wait where she was, which she probably she would've done even if I wasn't here, and made my outside. I carefully make my way back out through the automatic doors and try to find the source of the scream. After about ten seconds of walking, I catch a faint gasp from an alleyway beside the shop.
I quickly make my over to the source of the sound, while being wary of what I have to expect. What I saw next right in front of me, was the thing I least I thought to expect. The man from the shop lying on the ground, who I appeared to now to be dead. His chest was no longer rising and his body wasn't making any form of movement.
What sent complete and utter shock and confusion right to my core, was that pretty much all the fat that was on him earlier- Which you obviously couldn't miss- was now gone. I couldn't even comprehend what had happened within the time from when he was in the shop and now. Wasn't he just looking for his condoms or something? Wait... did he even pay for whatever he was buying? Well, I guess it doesn't matter now.
I am knocked from my daze at how this scene came to be, when I notice movement from behind the body. I quickly look above the corpse to stare right into the eyes of another person. And are their eyes... red and glowing?!
Well shit! What the hell have I gotten myself into this time. Havn't I already said I didn't want to die?
Ooh! Shit is about to go down :] I wasn't really sure about how to go about this chappy, but I guess this is how it has turned out. I hope you enjoyed it and don't forget to vote and comment like you amazing people know how to do! Toodaloo Biquishatches! :}
