You called Nancy from the house you were baby-sitting at. "So you're sure I can stay over? 'Cause my mom won't be back till Sunday, plus Mike and Holly are staying with their friends, and you know I can't stand to be around my dad for that long. I'd lose my shit," Nancy's soft voice came through the receiver.
"It's no problem. I'll pick you up after I finish baby-sitting. You okay?" you ask, trying your best to sound comforting.
"Uh-huh. It's just... You know, the police and reporters, and everything, it's like deja vu all over again," Nancy replied.
"I'll be there by 7:00, I promise. Bye, Nance," you reassure before hanging up. Your attention should've been on Jamie Lloyd, the child you were babysitting, but you just couldn't manage to pull your eyes away from the tv.
News reporter Brenda Wood stood at the center of the screen, speaking clearly, "The town's in shock, and no one can quite believe what has happened here. Although, this is not the first time the small community of Hawkins has endured such tragedy. Only a year ago, Barbara Holland, a straight-A student, and the ideal friend, was found murdered not far from this peaceful town square."
"Y/n!" a loud whine sounded out, your head turned towards Jamie, who had somehow managed to snap her Barbie's head off. "I was just trying to change her dress!" she wailed. You sighed as you turned off the tv and headed towards the girl.
It was 7:15 when the Lloyd's came home. You dialed Nancy's number once more and after a few seconds of waiting, she picked up. "Hello?"
"The Lloyd's came home late. I'm on my way, okay?" you replied.
"It's past 7:00," Nancy mumbled.
"Don't worry, you'll be okay. I'm gonna swing by the video store, Robin said she had a freebie for me. I was thinkin' Tom Cruise, All the Right Moves. You know if you pause it just right, you can see his penis?" you smirked, making sure your voice wasn't loud enough for the Lloyd's to hear.
"Whatever. Just hurry, okay?" Nancy chuckled.
"Ta-ta, Nance," you smiled before hanging up the phone.
When you got to the video store, the first thing you noticed was a lack of Robin and Steve's presence. You couldn't think of a time when at best one of them wasn't working, let alone both of them. It didn't matter, you were going to get the free movie, even if it meant prying it away from Keith's dead body.
"I want my free movie, fuckface," you said as you approached the counter, tapping your fingernails against the cheap laminate countertop.
"Has anyone ever told you you have a pleasant way with words?" Keith retort, sliding over your free copy of All the Right Moves.
"Pleasure doing business with ya, Keith," you sent him a toothy grin and a wink as you took your copy. "Hey, by the way, where're Robin and Steve?"
"I'm surprised you don't know. Robin wouldn't tell me what she was doing, said it was "of the utmost importance," and Steve said he was babysitting or something like that," Keith explained.
"All right, well, I'll catch you later. Bye, Keith!" you waved as you walked back to your car. You began the drive to Nancy's house.
When you pulled into Nancy's driveway, you saw her house swarmed with police cars. You ran over to where she sat in the back of an ambulance. "Oh, God, Nance, I'm so sorry I was late. Are you all right?"
"Ms. Y/l/n, you can't be here, this is an official crime scene," Officer Powell spoke, trying to pull you away from Nancy.
"Her mom's out of town. She's staying at my house tonight," you grabbed Nancy's hand and walked her to the police car. When you were sure she was okay, you stepped into your car and began the drive to the police station.
As you were walking into the station, Steve was getting escorted out. You sent him a small wave and smile as you walked over to Nancy. "Nance, we're gonna get you out of here, okay? Are you okay?"
She sniffled, wiping her nose with the back of her hand. You grabbed her bag and walked her around the back of the building and into your car.
The drive home was silent up until the last five minutes when you decided to break the ice, "D'you really think Steve did it? I mean, this is our-your Steve we're talking about," you stammered. She rolled her eyes at your words. "If you think it's him, Nance, I'll believe you. I just- I don't want Steve going to prison just 'cause you got a little spooked, 's all," you added.
"He was there, Y/n. I just, I can't believe that that was a coincidence," Nancy exclaimed, her eyes remained on the road ahead.
"No, I know. I know," you sighed, pulling into your driveway. You'd known Steve much longer than Nancy had. But she had the upper hand in the sense that she knew him in ways you'd only dreamed about knowing him. So, you could only shut up and nod whenever Nancy spoke about him.
You and Nancy had gotten comfortable in your room, Nancy stared at the ceiling as you watched Tom Cruise jog across your screen in his yellow football costume.
The sound of the phone ringing pulled you away from the screen, "Y/n/n, the phone! It's for Nancy!" your mom shouted.
Nancy shot up from her place on the bed and walked to the phone. You had stayed in bed until you heard Nancy wail, "No!" you walked over to Nancy. "Leave me alone!" she exclaimed, "who are you?"
"Hang up, Nance," you pleaded with her, watching as her face scrunched up in terror. She put the phone down and walked back into your room, you followed her.
"God, I feel so awful!" she said.
"What, Nancy, what happened?" you asked, sitting down by her side. You wrapped an arm around her shoulder.
"The caller, it was the caller," she croaked.
"That's great!" you exclaimed, your smile dropping when she sent you a glare. "I mean, I-it's great in the sense that now we know Steve isn't the killer, y'know? Since he's in jail, and all."
"Can we just go to sleep, please?" she begged you. You nodded awkwardly.
"Night, Nance."
