Part 1: out of the blue

While scrolling through her phone, Rosé let out a series of heavy sighs.

She is bored. Her mind is running miles away from her body right now. She hates her situation – a big fat ugly twisted ankle that was impeding her from getting out of her apartment for a whole week now. From time to time, she spares a look at her foot laying safely over a pile of pillows built by her overprotective girlfriend, like she would notice some difference in its appearance every time she looks away.

Rosé's bed smells like Jennie, that's why she chose that spot to spend her evening. Her girlfriend always sprayed her perfume on the bed and bedsheets before going to sleep, and now her fragrance spreads through the air every time Rosé adjusts her body against all those pillows.

Thinking about Jennie makes Rosé sigh again.

Jennie sent her a text over an hour ago and hasn't replied since then, making Rosé almost obsessed with her phone.

Rosé tries to think straight. Jennie cannot answer her because she is working – if having dinner with investors can be called work. No, Rosé, don't you do this, she refrains her thought before starting to think about herself as a spoiled child. She was supposed to be with Jennie today, it was her girlfriend's first meeting with the people that would bring her money to open her own business. Irene was the one responsible for gathering half of them since her restaurant was a famous spot for business meetings.

Now Rosé was feeling down just by thinking about her girl alone with those business people, especially when she knew what kind of people they were. She promised Jennie she would be there to support her, as a part of the business partnership herself.

These last months – nine months, if Rosé would want to be precisive – had a dreamlike aura. Her relationship with Jennie got so stronger that she found herself dumbfounded sometimes. They were like concrete, stone foundation, and steel strings. Jennie was always the smart and responsible type of person, but she became so much more for Rosé now. She was an image of security and stability, her calm voice lulled Rosé to placid places even when she had had the most awful days; Jennie's sharp sense of humor still manages to catch her off guard and leads Rosé to explode in a burst of giggles even in public places.

But her stupid ankle – and her tiring 'being late' routine, that always makes her run down the street to catch the subway – left Rosé out of this special night for Jennie, her girlfriend's first step towards independence. And now Rosé is angry with herself for being so clumsy. She could not deny her bad humor has also to do with Jennie's absence for the last couple of days. She'd been over Rosé all the time this last week, making her delicious soups and giving Rosé the best shoulder massages, worried about her injury and wellbeing. For two people so close to each other, Rosé got used to Jennie's constant presence in her home and routine on the second day of Jennie's nursery. It felt natural living with her girl along these days and now that Jennie was gone, it felt lonely. Jennie could not show up the day before, focused on working on her business portfolio, and didn't show up today. And even though they have been texting all day it's not the same.

Rosé drop her shoulders, being the spoiled child she was trying not to be.

The woman unlocks her phone again. Jennie's last text was a picture of her in a deep red dress, chosen a month before after a whole day searching through dozens of stores. Rosé still remembers how her feet got sore due to all the walking they did that day, but at least Jennie ended up satisfied and confident with her elegant red treasure. This night, Rosé's girlfriend is looking smoky and scary, her sharp cat eyes staring into Rosé's soul and leaving a trail of mixed feelings even through a simple picture.
