Jungkook
The ball is a complete mess, as usual.
There are stupid, sequestered, aristocratic people everywhere, bumbling about with their simpering, mindless talk. Tired of their constant chatter, and their insidious glances in my direction, as they speak in hushed voices that are only too clear (and very much meant to be so) to my ears, I wander away from the annoying crowd in search of peace. I wish I had never come.
This happens every year, and this year is worse.
Mrs Noze comes waltzing up to me, wearing a sparkling black dress, her hair done up, a shining ring through her nose, a sort of sinewy grace to her that belied the crafty expression on her face, the glint in her eye.
'Well, hello, Mr Jungkook,' she says, sweetly. 'I must admit, I am more than tad surprised you managed to show up today.'
'Oh really?' I raise an eyebrow. 'And why is that so?'
'Well, because...' she smiled wickedly, and I sighed internally, knowing what was about to follow, 'because of the recent....calamity, that has befallen you recently.'
'I assure you it is no more a calamity than that nose-ring, Madame,' I reply coldly.
She is taken aback by my rudeness, but does not falter. 'You joke around a lot, Mr Jeon,' she slaps my arm and smiles widely.
'I assure you a joke is the farthest thing from my mind at the moment,' I assure her. 'Now, if you shall excuse me. I need to fetch a drink for myself.'
'Oh, please.' She makes way for me, and I advance without looking back once. I can feel her eyes searing into the back of my head, the unspoken insults hit my ears. But I do not care.
The lights in the ball-room are blinding. The musicians' terrible rendition of what was supposed to be a Beethoven classic, gets on my nerves. I find my way to the drinks table, and a group of loudly talking businessmen and women immediately spring aside as I walk up. I nod at them briefly and begin to pour myself a drink, ignoring the whispers that immediately follow my appearance.
A young man appears by my side. 'Mr Jeon?'
I stare at him, then down at his name-badge. Ken, Kim Enterprises.
I know this guy. He was in one of Soobin's newspaper articles. A picture. Of him and...
I nod stiffly at him. 'Good evening.'
'Good evening, Sir,' he bows low. He looks at me pour myself some sparkling vodka, then at the people clustered to one side, shooting us looks and whispering frantically amongst themselves.
'I hope they aren't bothering you too much, Sir,' he says, in a low voice.
I laugh, curtly. 'I assure you I am not bothered by their foolish chatter in the least.'
'But you do think it foolish.' He smiles. 'So do I.'
I narrow my eyes at him. 'Why do you wish to talk to me, Ken?'
He hesitates. 'I-'
'Surely you know of the history between Kim and Jeon Enterprises? Especially with the accident of your employer, and the...happenings, of the past few weeks....the rivalry between our respective companies has increased tenfold. Surely you realize of the scandal a mere conversation between us can cause? Especially with that hound reporter Soobin lurking around, his eyes on us at this very moment.'
