The dungeons below the arena did not really exist anymore.
It used to be the Silver's torture pit, run by House Pietron.
Kaida put a stop to it, and outsourced to a proper prison, with proper regulations.
The dungeons were now completely empty, but this gave it a certain eeriness.
It had been scrubbed clean, but some blood stains were too stubborn, permanently dyeing some of the stone a faded red.
The screams, and yelps, and screeches of endless pain that always reverberated around the cells seemed to be fused to the air, making it heavy.
Yuri had insisted on following Kaida here, which the young Queen did not have any objections to.
But Kaida firmly ordered her to wait outside as she took the steps down into the cells.
It was night when Kaida decided to come down, but day and night looked the same in the dungeons.
Kaida walked slowly past the empty cells, her ivory dress sweeping the cobbled floor behind her, catching slightly on the uneven stone.
They had decided not to waste electricity down here, opting to go for classic torches, lighting the path.
It was incredibly dim bar the faint orange glow.
The shadows crept in at the corners, and they danced in the dark spots that cloud Kaida's periphery.
Kaida takes a deep breath before she arrives at the very last cell on the left hand side.
She stops a metre away from the bars, with her head held high.
She relaxes her shoulders, trying to be the picture of ease and confidence.
Maven is sitting on a simple and sleek metallic hovering slab.
He is wearing a black oversized long sleeve with matching black slacks.
His head is hung down and his hair is loose, obscuring his face.
The longer black strands suit him. It brings out his cheekbones and stops just at the curve of his jawline.
Maven rises slowly, and he lifts his head, letting his hair swish back.
He knows it is her.
Their eyes meet through the wide gaps between the bars.
Kaida had been thinking about how to approach this, but when she is faced with him, her mouth just starts moving involuntarily.
"How can you not know? How can you not know that I really did love you. I was never like you, Maven. I can't lie about my emotions."
Kaida abandoned all strategy, speaking candidly.
This catches Maven by surprise, he thought they would have skirted around for a bit.
He takes a subtle step closer.
"I defended you. I took a lightning bolt for you! We were meant to get married, for God's sake."
The words spill out of Kaida mouth, almost rushed.
She holds up her right hand, revealing the ring Maven had on him, in his last moment.
