All, but William, had exited the car. I couldn't help but wonder what was on Jase's mind. Why he was so uptight, why he was swearing like a sailor again.
I knew part of it was because of his brother, but, there had to be another reason.
"Shane!" I heard a voice shout. Jase. I must've zoned out again.
"Yeah?"
"We're splitting up here. You're coming with me."
I nodded my head. Shit. There was no way I was going to keep cool with him around me this whole time.
We searched the downstairs while Cole and Abby went upstairs. I put my hands in my pockets just to make sure I didn't fumble with them.
"You've been awfully quiet this whole time. Something up?"
I wanted to make a joke. Ever so badly. But I didn't. "Um..I just don't know what to think in this kind of situation.."
"I agree. I feel like it isn't real, yet at the same time, it is."
"Yeah.."
God, I wanted to tell him. Get it over with. Be rejected. But a part of me knew it wasn't the right time.
We checked classrooms and eventually we made it to the gymnasium. There were dead bodies on the ground along with some dead infected. But I noticed something wrong with one of them.
Being the stupid man I was, I went up to it and saw that it had an arrow through one of it's eyes.
"Holy-Jase, come look at this!" I shouted for him.
Jase came over and saw what I saw. "Someone has a bow and arrow?"
"Maybe, but the blood from this isn't dry nor has a stench. I think it's fresh."
"So someone else is in here with us."
"Most likely."
"Good thing I have the smart biology boy on my side."
I tried to hide my blush but my smile didn't hold out. "I think it's common sense to know that," I chuckled.
"Well then I'm stupid. Come on, let's go find them."
We both left the gymnasium and started looking through more classrooms. Then we found one that was closed. Jase opened it slowly. We saw nothing but knocked over tables and chairs on the ground.
"We should look in further." I assured.
"Right." he pushed the door more so we could enter. He checked around a desk while I went to the pile of them. I found a slip of paper between one of the desks.
I slid it out and unfolded it.
My name is Cherri. I need help. Something is here and I don't know what to do. The only thing I remember is the infection starting. But I do know who started it. Oliver. The Chemistry teacher here. The one that lives at the pomegranate farm. He started this. I don't know how. But he wants me on his side. I need help. I don't know what to do.
I stared at the note. I didn't know what to think of it. Was it a lie? Was she in on this and was tricking us?
"Shane? Everything alright?" I heard Jase ask. His voice made me snap into reality.
"I um-I found this." I handed the note to him.
He took it from me and read it. "Holy shit. So there is another person here."
"I think they're upstairs. This is the last room down here other than the Chemistry hall."
"That's a bad place to hide with all the windows." Jase sighed. "We need to check there, then the upstairs."
I nodded my head and we left the room.
It wasn't long until Jase and I made it to the Chemistry hall, but when we got there, there was no one. This Cherri person was upstairs.
