I was on my balcony in my apartment, about to
have some weed. Before I heard a knock on my door.
"Great." I sighed.
I got off the balcony rail and went back inside. When I opened my door I saw Finn standing there with Jack and Olivia, and some group behind them.
"I-Finn?" I questioned, I had to be seeing things. My anxiety spiked earlier and maybe I'm just seeing this.
"Grace, I know it's last minute, but we all need a place to stay during this." Finn had said.
I sighed. "Fine. But who are those people?"
"Some people I found, they won't hurt us if we don't hurt them. Now please let us in before the infected get us."
I couldn't bear to see my siblings become the infected. So I did as he asked, and let them in.
I let both my siblings into my bedroom where they kept the door open, but stayed away from the window. Then I saw one of the guys holding a small kid, looking the same age as my younger siblings.
"Is he alright?" I asked, directing towards the guy.
"We're not sure," he responded.
"What do you mean?" Finn asked.
The guy sighed. "We may have lied when we said none of us were infected." Finn's expression changed.
"Let them explain." I said, stopping Finn before he went towards them.
"We trusted this one person, named Cherri. We thought she was on our side, but we were very wrong. Turns out she's working with the guy who started this. Who's a chemistry teacher at South. And last night when we found a place to hide, she tried to infect us. And a few minutes ago we found a mark on the back of my brother's neck that looked like a syringe had poked it." he explained. He seemed frantic.
"Set him on the couch, let me see." I said.
The guy did as I said and set the boy on the couch. He was passed out, so when I checked his neck, I saw no dot, nor scar from it being recently stabbed. But his neck did feel awfully warm. So I checked his forehead and it was burning.
"Good news, he's not infected, whatever you saw was not from the syringe. Bad news, he has a fever." I told him.
"That little shit." he sighed. "I almost had a panic attack because of him."
"What do you think caused it?" a guy with ginger hair said.
"Could be lack of water, lack of food, sleep or even just a common flu." I explained. "Has he been near anyone sick?"
"No." the guy with brown hair responded.
"But we all have been lacking no sleep, food nor water." a guy with black hair and glasses said.
"Alright, so his immune system is weaker than the rest of yours, so we'll just have to take care of him and when he wakes up, we'll make actual food other than fruits or vegetables." I said.
"No, Cherri said that the infected have a really good sense of smell-" a girl with dark brown hair started.
"She's lying." I interrupted. "I've been making regular food ever since this started. Nothing has come." Then I looked down at her feet. She was hiding one behind the other and I saw a bloody scar around the hidden one. "What happened to your ankle?"
"Oh uh-" she stammered. "Back when this first started-I got caught in a trap when we were told to head to our schools. Then in the morning, there were traps and infected, and I missed one and stepped in it."
"How long has it been like that?"
"Two days, I think."
I sighed. "Finn, you take care of the boy, I'll help the girl."
"Alright," he responded.
"But next time you come early, tell me, because I was about to do something before you came."
He turned around to face me. "Again? How many times has it been this week?"
"It's actually the first time this week. Because I haven't been outside until today, when I saw my first infected. They turned right in front of me." I paused. "Now run cold water on a towel and put it on the boy's forehead."
"William." the guy with brown hair said. "His name is William."
I nodded my head. "Take care of William, Finn."
