Chapter Five
I lean against the back of the wall near Gwen's cell. I watch as Morgana runs up back up the stairs, tears starting to fall from her eyes.
Merlin comes running down the steps.
"Gwen," he calls to her.
She stands up and tries to go to the door, but the chains on her hands stop her.
"Thank you," she tells him.
"What for?"
"Coming to see me."
"I'm sorry."
She shakes her head, "It's not your fault."
Uh, yeah it is his fault.
"Well..."
"It's alright, don't worry about me. There's no point in crying about it. I mean, I mean I'm not saying that you were going to cry about me, obviously I don't think that."
"Aw Gwen, I can't have this happen."
Oh shit. He is not going to go turn himself in. He'll only get himself killed.
"Please, one thing. You don't have to do it. But..."
"What?"
"Remember me."
He shakes his head, "You're not going to die. I'm not going to let this happen."
He turns and goes away and I follow after him.
I grab his shirt, "Hell no you're not turning yourself in. You're only gonna get you're self killed if you do that."
"And what makes you think I'm going to do that?"
I roll my eyes at him. "You can't just barge in there and admit to saving her father!"
"Watch me!"
"If you're so hell bent on doing it, at least let me go in a few minutes before you."
"Why?"
"So you don't have to see Arthur yelling at me for wandering off without telling him. I swear I'm like his dog or something. I'm pretty sure the job description if second in command of the royal army does not entail becoming the dog of the prince."
Merlin laughs, "Fine then. But you can't stop me."
I throw up my hands. "I tried."
I open the doors to the throne room as quietly as I can, and sneak in. I take my place next to Arthur.
"Where have you been?" He growls at me.
"Dungeon."
"I figured."
"If burning this witch doesn't stop the poison, how do I protect my people?" Uther asks all the people gathered around a table in the center.
You won't stop the poison by killing her. You protect your people by using magic. Easy little equation.
"My men our closing down the water pumps," Arthur tells him.
"But the emergency supply won't last for much longer. We have to find a way of cleansing the water of the disease," Gaius explains. Oh how great, Gaius is here to witness Merlin's stupidity.
"But how?" Uther asks.
"Well," Gaius starts. He's interrupted by the opening of the doors to the room as Merlin bursts in.
"It was me," he announces. I look at Arthur, and he looks like he doesn't believe it. His lip is curled up in disbelief.
"It was me who uses magic to cure Gwen'a father. Gwen is not the sorcerer, I am."
I hold my breath.
Gaius stands up. "Merlin, are you mad?"
"I cannot let her die for me. I place myself at your mercy."
"He doesn't know what he's talking about," Gaius defends.
"I do."
"Have him arrested," Uther commands.
"Father please, I can't allow this, this is madness," Arthur injects. "There's no way Merlin is a sorcerer."
"Did you not hear him?"
"Yes."
"He's admitted it."
"He saved my life, remember?"
"Why should he fabricate such a story?"
"As Gaius said, he's got a grave mental disease."
My mouth dropped open and I can barley breath. Mental disease? Gods Arthur, you're a genius!
"Really?" Uther asks.
Arthur nods.
Oh hell no you don't, you don't get to have all the fun with this.
"He's in love," I say, walking over to Arthur.
"What?" Merlin asks.
"With Gwen."
I smile like a maniac and he shoots me a look.
"I am not..."
"Yes you are," I interrupt. "I saw you yesterday with that flower she'd given you."
"I'm not in love with her."
Arthur and I walk over to him. Arthur puts him arm around him.
"It's alright, you can admit it."
I continue to smile like a manic and nod to him.
"I don't even think of her like that!" Merlin counters.
"Perhaps she cast a spell on you," Uther suggests.
My grin disappears. Uther starts laughing and my grin comes back.
"Merlin is a wonder, but the wonder is that he's such an idiot," Arthur says. "There's not way he's a sorcerer." He says the last part more seriously.
"Don't waste my time again. Let him go."
Merlin and Gaius leave the room. I continue to revel in my genius the rest of the meeting, not paying a lick of attention to anything.
When Uther dismissed everyone, I follow Arthur out.
"That was good," I congratulate him.
"I might say the same for you."
I smile and nod. "Oh hell yeah, I'm a genius."
He shakes his head at me.
I quietly slide away from him as he goes toward his room. When he turns the corner in front of me, I make a mad break for the other end of the castle.
~~**~~
I approach the door to Gaius' house and hear them talking inside.
"Maybe I should go around wearing a pointy hat," Merlin complains.
"I don't think you'll fine one big enough," Gaius tells him. "Anyway, forget that. If we're going to save Gwen we have to find out what's contaminating the water."
They turn and head towards the door. I jump in along side Merlin.
"Hello love bird," I laugh.
He glares at me. "What are you doing here anyway dog?"
"I prefer Kat, thank you very much. I managed to sneak away from Arthur, and now I'm going to help you find what's contaminating the water."
He rolls his eyes. "Who invited you?"
"I invited myself, and as far as I know, you can't question me."
"Fine then..."
I give him a fake smile. "Good."
We reach the outskirts of the town, and we approach a big wooden door. Gaius pulls out a pair of keys and unlocks it.
Merlin picks up a torch, and lights it using the big bowl thing of fire right by the door.
We descend down a flight of stairs, and into a system of tunnels.
I follow them through the tunnel, on high alert the entire time.
"The water from here supplies the whole town," Gaius says once we reach a huge basin of water. "Take a sample," he orders Merlin.
Merlin hands him the torch, and opens up a vial. He leans down over the basin, and fills the vial with water.
"Lets take it back and examine it," Gaius tells us.
Something roars behind us, and I draw my sword.
A huge monster emerges from the water and roars at us.
"What the hell was that?" I scream when it disappears after a few seconds back into the water.
Gaius grabs Merlin, and I follow after them without another word.
~~**~~
"Kat!" Arthur yells at me as I follow Gaius and Merlin across the square.
I smile at him. "Hi Arthur. How can I help you?"
He grabs my arm again and pulls me toward the castle.
"Do you ever get sick of dragging me everywhere?"
"Yes, because I have to listen to you yapping."
"Then stop pulling me! I'm not a dog, I can think for myself."
"It wasn't my choice to have you be my shadow. Apparently it's best for you to always be with me. I can't imagine why."
"Yeah, cause then I have to deal with your constant lack of emotion."
"And I have to deal with your bitter sarcasm."
"Point taken. Where are we going anyway?"
"Uther wants to see me."
Of course. I should have known.
The guards open the door to the throne room and we walk in. Seems like we've been frequenting this place.
"Have you found anything more?" Uther asks.
"We've tried," Arthur replies. "We can keep looking."
Yeah uh, I've been busy doing much more helpful stuff than searching houses. Sorry, not sorry.
"People are dying, we can't delay any longer. We must kill the witch. Move her execution forward to tonight."
I open my mouth to protest, but Arthur covers my mouth with his hand. He gives me a look that says, now is not the time for one of your smart-alec comments.
Oh please, it's always time for one of my smart-alec comments.
Once we exit the room, I pull out from his grip, and run off to Morgana's room.
"Kat! Where the hell do you think you're going now?" He yells after me.
I ignore him and continue on.
I burst into her room, barley winded. I'm in very good shape if I don't say so myself.
"They're brining forward the execution to tonight."
Her eyes widen. "We have to go find Gaius and Merlin then."
I nod. "Come on then."
We leave the castle and head down to their house.
Morgana rushes in with me right behind her.
"They're brining forward the execution," she tells them. "We have to prove Gwen's innocence."
"We've tried," Gaius says.
"Please, just tell me what I can do to help."
"And me, I can help too," I throw in.
"We need Arthur," Merlin tells us.
"Arthur?" Morgana asks.
Yeah, he always needs Arthur. Some destiny thing. He hasn't explained it to me fully yet. I don't think he even knows the whole story.
"There's a monster, an Avank in the water supply. That's what's causing the plague."
"Well we must tell Uther."
Gaius shakes his head. "The Avank is a creature posed my magic. Telling Uther wouldn't save Gwen, he'd just blame her for conjuring it."
Morgana nods. "So what are we to do?"
"We need to destroy it then the plague will stop, the maybe Uther will see sense," Merlin says.
"That's why you need Arthur."
"He's our best chance."
I roll my eyes. "Hello, I'm standing right here ya know."
Merlin shakes his head at me. Destiny, has to be Arthur, blah, blah, blah, dragon, blah, blah, blah. Yeah, I got it.
"But he won't want to disobey the king," Merlin continues, not responding to my comment with words.
Morgana nods. "Leave that to us."
Finally I get to do something. Although me going along might not be the best choice. Arthur will be too busy yelling at me to consider what Morgana is telling him.
She nods to me, and we head back up to the castle. Bleh, so much walking. I need a rest day or something. Or at least a night.
We go into Arthur's room, and I stand next to Morgana.
"You alright?" He asks her. "Sorry about all this," he motions to scraps of food on the table. "Merlin's not been in today."
And you have to reply on servants? No wonder kings and queens eventually died out. Except in England of course. Long live the queen and all that jazz.
So far, no yelling. Ha.
"Poor Merlin," she says.
"Yeah," Arthur agrees.
"He offered to give up his life to save Gwen's. I certainly can't imagine any man loving me so much."
Trust me, me neither.
"No, I certainly can imagine that either," Arthur replies.
"That's because you're not like Merlin."
No shit Sherlock.
Damn I love that saying.
"He's a lover."
"Yeah, maybe that's because I haven't found the right person to love."
I snicker. He is pretty damn good with comebacks, I'll give him that.
"Sadly the age if gallantry seems to be dead. You look around all you see is small men, not big enough to fill their armor."
Yep, then there's me. I break all the rules of ancient cultures. Thank you Martir.
"There's not one of the able to stand up for what is right."
"What do you want me to do?" He asks.
"There's a monster in the water supply causing the plague. They need you to kill it, because apparently I'm not good enough," I explain.
"You're not," he counters.
"Do you really want to go there?"
He glares at me, and doesn't answer. "Where to?"
Morgana smiles, and leads him out to where Merlin should be waiting.
We meet Merlin in the square, and Arthur draws his sword, ready to fight the thing.
We head down to the tunnels where Merlin and I saw the monster earlier. I swear days go so slowly here.
We light two torches, one for Arthur and one for Morgana.
"You better be right about this Merlin," Arthur warns as we start to wander the tunnels.
A growl echoes through the tunnel, and Morgana gasps. I draw my sword and stand next to her, ready to defend her if I have to.
"You should stay here," Arthur says to Morgana.
Good boy, knows I'm not going anywhere.
"I'm coming with you," Morgana says.
"No," Arthur responds.
"Scared I'll show you up?"
"Father will put us both in chains if he knew I'd endangered you."
"Good thing he doesn't know about it."
"I'm telling you Morgana turn back, you could get hurt."
"So could you. If you don't get out of my way."
She pushes him out of the way, and continues on. Merlin gives Arthur and look, and he just rolls his eyes.
I smirk at him and he glares at me.
He's making glaring at me a habit too.
We continue on down the tunnels.
"How are we going to find it?" Morgana asks.
"Just hope we do, or it finds us," Merlin says.
"Stop," Arthur commands.
"What?" Merlin asks.
"It's just a shadow."
It's just a shadow 'till it isn't.
We reach the room with the main basin full of water.
"Spread out," Arthur tells us. He points for Merlin to go one and Morgana the other. He nods for me to come with him.
"Ya know, I'm still getting this whole dog vibe."
"Shut up Kat."
We look down the tunnel, the toward back to the basin.
A growl echoes through the tunnel behind us.
So it comes for the two with the swords. That's one smart creature right there.
We slowly turn around, and the monster charges at us.
I duck to one side and Arthur goes to the other.
Morgana and Merlin come rushing back toward us.
"What is it? Are you alright?" She asks desperately.
"Yeah."
"Did you see it?" Merlin asks.
"Yes."
"What did it look like?"
"Its, it's quick."
Morgana screams, and I turn to see the monster right in front of her.
I grab her and pull her back. Arthur lunges for the thing with his sword, and it disappears again.
It is quick. A bit too quick for my liking.
"Where is it?" Arthur calls.
"I think it's gone this way!" Merlin says.
We head down the tunnel Merlin through he heard it go, with Arthur leading the way. I stick by Morgana, just in case I need to defend her. Merlin can fend for himself.
A growl comes from a little further down the tunnel, and the thing slowly crawls into view.
I can see the fear in Morgana's eyes. She's not used to monsters, I am.
Arthur slowly approaches it, then lunges at it. His sword somehow gets knocked out of his hand and goes flying.
"Arthur," I toss him mine. Again, the sliver quality doesn't vanish. That shouldn't happen. Only when the sword is held by its true owner does it become a double blade, just a little saftey feature. It was forged for me, he shouldn't be able to keep it double.
"Don't lose that or I swear I'll kill you," I warn him.
The monster growls, and my sword goes flying out of his hand.
"You are so dead," I mutter.
Damn him. If I can't find that later...
Arthur holds the torch out in front of him, using it sort of as a weapon.
I hate not being able to do anything. My knives are purely celestial bronze, they won't do any good.
"Arthur use the torch!" Merlin calls to him.
He swings the torch at the monster.
I hear Merlin saying something behind me in a language I don't understand.
Gods he's using magic.
Of freaking course.
Wait. Duh. Elements. The thing must be made of earth and water, so only fire and wind can destroy it.
Sometimes he's a genius, sometimes he's an idiot. Right now, he's both.
Wind comes through the tunnel, and picks up the fire.
The flame engulfs the monster, and it howls in pain, burning up.
I smile and pay him on the shoulder.
"Well done," I whisper so the other two can't hear.
He nods to me, and hurries after the other two.
I mutter a spell in ancient Greek, and my sword comes flying to my hand. It's kinda like accio in Harry Potter. Maybe I should try using those spells some times... Why didn't I think of that before?
~~**~~
I stand by the door as the guard unlocks it. I nod to him and he goes back to what ever he was doing.
"Gwen!" Gwen's father cries, running only the cell
"Father!"
They embrace, and my heart breaks a little. I've never had that close of a relationship with... anyone. I love my dad and all, but I'm not too close to him. And my mum... Well she's a whole different story.
Morgana, Arthur and I join Gwen and her father in the cell. That sounds really weird... All of us smiling, happy to see her free again.
"Thank you," Gwen says, coming up to me and Morgana.
"Don't thank us," Morgana tells her. "It was more Merlin."
"Really?"
"He's the real hero here."
"I don't know what to say," Gwen gasps.
"I didn't do anything," Merlin replies modestly.
"I'm great full to you all," her father says. "Come on Gwen."
They leave the cell, and I wait for Morgana and Merlin to leave too.
"Merlin," Morgana says. Oh this is about to get good. Or bad. "I waned you to know that, your secrets safe with me."
My heart stops.
How can she know?
"My secret?" Merlin asks.
"Don't pretend, I know what you did."
"You do?"
"I saw it with my own eyes."
"You did?"
Yep, I did.
"I understand why you don't want anyone to know."
"Well obviously..."
She smiles, "I won't tell anyone."
I breath a sigh of relief.
"You don't mind me talking to you about it?"
"Uh no... Its.... You have no idea how hard it is to keep this hidden."
"Well, you can continue to deny it but I think Gwen's a very lucky woman."
Oh!
Ha!
I'm now dead.
I attempt to hold in my laughing until Morgana leaves.
"Gwen?"
She puts her finger to her mouth. "It's our little secret."
Morgana leaves and I burst out laughing.
"I told you! I told you, I told you, I told you!" I laugh.
He rolls his eyes at me. "Whatever the hell you say Kat. But ya know." He lowers his voice. "I think you have a thing for Arthur, the way you two fight all the time." He raises his eyebrows. "Just saying."
I stare at him, my mouth hanging open.
Me? Like Arthur?
No, never. He's an ignorant, annoying boy who doesn't understand that women are as equal as men.
"No. No, no, no. No freaking way!"
He snickers, "Yeah right."
He goes leaves the cell and goes back up the stairs, probably laughing at me.
I shake my head again. Like Arthur? No... Never... Never...
~~**~~
A/N: Ok, I loveeee that part sooooo much. The one where Arthur's like, he has a grave mental condition. I died when I watched that. And I died while I rewrite it XD Its just genius! What do ya think? Kat and Arthur? Should it be a thing?
I set an insentive for myself. I'll allow myself to watch the last episode of season one once this chapter is published. By the time you're reading this, I'm curled up in a ball on my bed with my phone, biting my nails off at the suspense. Actually, I'll be picking my nails off... Same diffrence XD
