Chapter Eleven

I stalk through the forest next to Arthur, an arrow knocked in my bow, ready to shoot at a moment's notice.

Arthur stops moving, and crouches down. "Merlin, spear," he hisses to Merlin. He drops the spear, and Arthur has to pick up him. "Do you have any actual gifts, Merlin?"

"No," Merlin replies dryly, focusing on the forest in front of him."Let me think, I'm not naturally rude or insensitive."

I chuckle and Arthur glares at me.

"Just naturally irritating."

Arthur gets back up, and starts moving again. We take a few more paces forward, before we hear a roar coming from inside the forest.

Merlin's eyes widen in fear.

"Its probably more scared of you than you are of it," I assure him, turning around.

Something lets out a load roar behind me, and I slowly turn to face it.

Why hello there giant lizard-snake-godzilla-thing. I might have been wrong about you.

Don't kill me.

Arthur drops his spear, turns, and sprints back through the forest. I run after him, throwing my bow over my shoulder and throwing my arrow back into my sheath.

Merlin falls over, and the giant lizard stops over him. Arthur grabs him, and pulls him to his feet with the aid of another knight. Merlin and Arthur start running again, but the other knight stumbles and falls.

He's doomed.

We stop in a clearing about a hundred yards from where we last saw the thing.

"Have we lost it?" Merlin asks. "Who's missing? Where's Sir Belivere?"

A scream, a human scream, reverberates through the forest, chilling me to the bone.

I think I found him.

"The creature you described has all the characteristics of a Questing Beast," Gaius says after we explain what the creature looked like.

"Surely that's a myth," Arthur says.

Questing Beast? Must be some kind of magical monster, not one of Greek origin.

"According to the old books, the appearance of the Questing Beast is supposed to foreshadow a time of great upheaval."

Oh joy. That sounds like fun.

"Gaius," Uther warns. "That's an old wive's tale."

"Look, what ever it is its spreading panic. The people fear it will enter the city."

"Then we must kill it," Uther orders. "Arthur, gather the guard together, you ride at dawn."

Come on, why couldn't we ride at midnight or something? Midnight is much better than dawn.

"You've seen the foe we face, its a creature of nightmare," Arthur says to the men. I stand next to him, my green cape billowing in the wind. I'm starting to like this thing.

"But you are the best knights in the realm. We can, and we will, defeat it before it harms another citizen of our kingdom." Arthur draws his sword. "For the love of Camelot!"

The rest of the knights draw their swords. "For the love of Camelot!"

"Arthur!" Someone screams. I turn and see Morgana running down the stairs toward us.
