Summary: Steve knows hanky code because of a past relationship with Billy and wears his own after noticing Eddies.

Set after season 4: Eddie survived and Max only has a few broken bones because Steve, Robin and
Nancy got to Vecna faster and actually killed him so Hawkins hasn't been destroyed by the portals.

Steves POV
I had noticed on the first day that we met. Right after he stoped pointing the broken beer bottle at my throat. Eddie had worn that black bandana in his left back pocket the entire time and I haven't really had a chance to react to it.

I knew what it meant, I had learned all about the hanky code from Billy in the short time we were together before he was murdered by the mind flayer.

I also have a black bandana, but I've never worn it. I got it from Billy and at the time I didn't need it. After his death I wasn't really in the mood for a hookup either and then I just forgot about it.

But now, now that everything with the upsidedown has ended, now that everyone is save, now I have time for myself, time to think.

And thinking means having to figure out my feelings for Eddie. I realized that I liked him in the upsidedown, when he threw his vest at me. I haven't been able to stop thinking about him ever since.

So it isn't a question of wether or not I have feelings for him, it is wether or not I should act on them.

All of us are getting together at my house in an hour, just to hangout and talk. So right now I'm standing in front of my mirror trying to decide if I should put the black bandana into my right back pocket or not.

I know that if I do it Eddie will probably notice and draw his conclusions and I don't know if I'm ready for that. It's not as if I'm insecure about my sexuality, it's just that Robin is the only person that currently knows I'm bi. And even though I have fought literal monsters, this is probably the scariest thing I will ever do.

But who knows what will happen in the future and how much time we even still have together, so I better take every chance I have bevor it's to late.

Which means that I am now standing in my kitchen, preparing snacks and drinks for mostly the little devils, while having a bandana in my pocket, that feels like it's heavier than my bat.

It's now 4 pm and everyone starts to arrive. First Lucas and Dustin, getting dropped of by Dustin's mum. They of cause immediately invade my kitchen after yelling "Hi Steve" and nearly running into me.

While I watch them to make sure that no one's getting hurt I hear a "WAIT" from behind and a second later El, Will and Mike come running into the kitchen. This time they actually trip me and I stumble into the wall behind me.

"Sorry about them", Nancy says, walking in with Johnathan. I turn around: "It's fine, they haven't seen each other in two days. And that is a lot for these little shits." "Yeah, especially when they usually see each other every hour of the day", Johnathan adds, "Are we the last ones?" "No, Eddie, Robin and Max are not here yet. I don't know who's car they are taking, but Robin said that they found one and don't need a ride"

'And I'm not sure who I want to see behind the steering wheel' I add mentally, because none of them have a license, Robin doesn't have one, because she is poor and won't let me pay for it and I have been in a car with Eddie and Max and know, that that isn't save either.

They miraculously arrive a few minutes later without any new injuries or a visible scratch on the car, which I still don't know the owner of btw.

I turn around to face them, only looking at Robin though, because Max has joined the other kids in the kitchen and I'm not ready for Eddies reaction yet.

"Hey Robin, how have you been?" "Good, good. We brought some snacks, didn't want you to run out of food", she jokes. But it's only half-hearted and I can see in her eyes that she definitely noticed the bandana. I know that she has a lot of questions, because no one knew about Billy and me and Robin and I never talked about the hanky code.

Now I hesitantly turn over to Eddie. I'm still not really ready, I don't think I could ever be, but I would be weird and rude to ignore him. He has done nothing wrong, it's not his fault, that I have the biggest crush of my life on him.

I try to put on a big smile to hide my nerves:" Hi Eddie, I haven't seen you in a few days either! How are you doing?" He looks confused and irritated, did I do something wrong? Was the smile to fake? Did he think it was rude, that I greeted him last?

"Hi Steve, I've been good. Well, as good as it gets with everything that's happened." Well, that doesn't sound to pissed, maybe I'm didn't mess up completely.

"SHIT!", we hear in that moment out of the kitchen. When we get there all of the kids are standing next to each other, smiling innocently. "Come on, what happened, what are you hiding?", I ask. "Nothing!" Dustin's reply comes way to fast. "We know something happened, it was quite loud. You're not in trouble, just tell me so I can clean it up!"

"Fine", Mike and Dustin, who were standing in the middle, step apart. Behind them is a pile that looks like at least five shattered plates. "Don't touch them, I don't want any of you injuring yourself. Did anyone get hurt when they fell?" I need to make sure they are all fine, I don't want anything to hurt them. Even if it is themselves instead of upsidedown monsters.

After checking all of them for injuries I hush everyone out of the kitchen and get e broom. When I come back only Robin is left in the kitchen. "When, who and how do you know?" She whisper yells at me, glancing out into the living room to make sure that no one can hear her.

I try to play stupid: "What do you mean" "Oh dingus, you know exactly what I mean. But just in case you're trying to change the topic; When did you get that black bandana, who did you wear it for and how did you know about the hanky code?" "Fine", I give in, "I got the bandana from Billy. He's also the one that taught me all about it."

I can see the surprise and the question in her face. This was not the answer that she was expecting, I guess. "Billy and I were dating for nearly four month before he was killed." This seams to shock her even more, understandably.

"Dating? Like actually, real dating? Like with kissing and stuff?" "Most of the time rather fucking than kissing, but in general: Yes." I have never seen Robin Buckley this speechless, but I think I at least managed to avoid the 'who caused this now' question.

"We're definitely going to talk about this later in more detail! But now I need to who you are wearing it for! Of cause I already have my suspicions, but you managed to surprise me so much today, that I'm not sure if I can trust my instincts on this one." Well I guess I was wrong than, I'm not getting out of this.

"If you already know, why do you need me to say it?" "I already told you, dingus, plus I know that you don't want to say it so I practically have to, don't I?" "No, you absolutely do not have to! You just risk someone hearing it!", I know, that she will not let me leave the kitchen until I tell her. We are also taking suspiciously long to clean this so I better tell her now, bevor someone actually listens:

"It's Eddie."
