Savannah let out a soft gasp and shrank behind Mello's back. She took his rough hand in hers, she had always been frightened by Roger. Her anxiety always came to an acute point when he used that voice. His stern tone, practically a growl from deep inside him.
Mello returned the man's glare with a fiery look of his own. Any fear he had had for the man when he had first arrived at Whammy's had melted over the time he had been here. "What about?" Mello questioned in a low tone.
Roger sighed. "First off, what the hell happened to the door?"
"Long story" Mello snapped.
"Fine. I don't have the time. Meet me in my office in five minuets."
Mello sighed and gave Savannah's hand a slight squeeze before glowering at Roger. "And what for?" he sassed.
"A conversation between Near, you and I." Roger replied in an aggravated tone, getting annoyed with the boy's attitude.
Mello's eyes thinned in a suspicious expression. They grazed up and down the man, reading his body language. "I don't want anything to do with that big-headed prick." He spat.
Savannah gasped, "Mellon! Watch it!" She warned him, only to be rewarded with a glance from the side of his eye.
"I didn't ask." Roger argued.
"No. I'm not coming." Mello said in the coldest voice he could muster while clasping Savannah's hand.
"Then I suppose you don't want a message from L..." The older man explained, revealing the subject.
L.
Both children let out loud gasps of suprise. "L?!" They exclaimed in unison.
A smirk found its way onto Roger's face. "The one and only."
Mello groaned softly in defeat. L was one of his only weaknesses. "Fine." He admitted.
Roger gave a nod before walking past them, out the door and down to his office where he waited for the two boys.
After the man left, Mello turned to Savannah with a small smile. "Look, wait here. I should be back soon." He instructed.
The girl nodded. "O-okay." She said softly.
Mello sighed and left the room, striding down to Roger's office. The blonde was only a bit nervous, mainly because last time he was in the office he had used a kid as his personal punching bag, leaving a sickening yellow and purple bruise to grace his cheek bone paired with a matching one to highlight his gut. As he swung open Roger's door to reveal the albino sitting on the floor with a puzzle and the man at his desk, the nervous feeling was replaced with a knot of hatred for Near.
"Please, come in." Roger motioned to an empty chair next to Near on the floor.
Mello obliged, sinking gladly into the chair. "So what's this 'message from L'?" Mello quizzed.
Roger sighed. "Mello.. Near.. I'm afraid L is..."
"Is what?!" Mello growled.
"D-dead..." Roger finished in a shaky voice.
For a moment the world seemed as if it was still. It was as if no birds flew outside, as if no wind blew, as if no child cried. The world stood still for those three in that moment.
Near looked up from his puzzle for only a split second, emotion flashed through his eyes, rage and sorrow mixed with a hint of pain and glimmered through his dark orbs.
Shock overtook Mello. He stood up so quickly that the chair he was siting in toppled over behind him with a loud crash. "L?! DEAD?! .... IMPOSSIBLE!" He fumed in disbelief. The boy leaned over Roger's desk to get in the man's face, slapping his palms onto the weathered wood of its surface.
